  • Winter of the World: The Century Trilogy, Book 2

    Story

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

I liked volume 1 but I loved volume 2. The story captivated me and is excellently told. One of the best historical fiction I've ever enjoyed.

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

I usually like John Grishom. This book was disappointing and I managed to finish it but don't recommend it. The reader was not good. It was lifeless and disappointing.

The Spandau Diary -- what was in it? Why did the secret intelligence agencies of every major power want it? Why was a brave and beautiful woman kidnapped to get it? Why did a chain of deception and violent death lash out across the globe, from survivors of the Nazi past to warriors in this new conflict about to explode? Why did the world's entire history of World War II have to be rewritten as the future hung over a nightmare abyss?

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

Pamela says: "The circus of your dreams"

    Story

This book was ranked as a 5 star. I thought it was a zero. Do yourself a favor and don't even start it. It's convoluted, not believable, and very boring and while the reader took great pains to make something out of nothing, in my opinion he failed. I made myself go the end hoping it would redeem itself. But it didn't. I am sorry I wasted my time on it.

Bronson Pinchot does a superb job on this. I loved his narration and think its the best presentation I've ever heard. He made Flag so evil it made me quiver. The book is fun and I really enjoyed it.

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

This book has some brilliant parts and is sometimes wonderfully engaging. Other parts are padded with extra non relevant data that I was hating the book. The ending was disappointing. The book is way too long and could have been told in half the time.

In which Daniel Waterhouse, fearless thinker and courageous Puritan, pursues knowledge in the company of the greatest minds of Baroque-era Europe -- in a chaotic world where reason wars with the bloody ambitions of the mighty, and where catastrophe, natural or otherwise, can alter the political landscape overnight.

I wanted to like this book. But I couldn't make it past the first section. So erudite, so boaring, so full of non significant significance. I fell for the promotion of it. If you like the history of this period, stay away from this book.
