In vivid, brilliant fiction that illuminates the dark psychology of soldiers, Jeff Shaara brings to life the familiar characters, stunning triumphs, and soul-crushing defeats of the fascinating, long-forgotten Mexican-American War.

    "Enjoy learning about history"
    Overall

This was my first Shaara book, and I learned why many people love him as an author. At first I almost didn't get the book because it was an period I didn't care much about. I learned that my lack of interest was really due to a lack of knowledge. I not only enjoyed learning more about a fogotten period of our history, but enjoyed learning about the early military experiences of many of the men who would later become the leaders of both sides during the civil war.

Did Columbus believe that God called him west to undiscovered lands? Does American democracy owe its inception to the handful of Pilgrims that settled at Plymouth? If, indeed, there was a specific, divine call upon this nation, is it still valid today?

Where does The Light and the Glory rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best books I've listened to. It is not only enjoyable, but extremely enlightening about our nation's history.

    Any additional comments?

I give this book my highest possible recommendation. I hope that audible releases the other two books of this series in unabridged form as well.

Some mistakes can change your life forever. For Matt Hunter, that mistake came in one terrible moment when his attempt to help a friend and stop a fight resulted in an accidental death. Matt was convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison. Time that his peers spent in college, Matt endured behind bars.

This is my first Harlan Coben book, and it definately makes me want to try more. Great mystery with many twists that I could have never seen coming, plus likable characters. Highest recommendation.

As opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others, a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords.

"Great book, start to a great series"
    Overall

I started the book with some reservation, wondering if such a long book could keep my interest without dragging. I not only loved the book, but have now listened to the next two in the series. The only negative; the series is six books long, and the last book will likely not be out for another 6-8 years, if he continues his current pace.

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six. They were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry was thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future.

Herve Bronnimann says: "My Favorite Audiobook so far"
"Don't make the mistake of buying into the reviews"
    Overall

For me, buying this book was an example of the mistake of following the crowd. I thought, "with over 500 reviews and such a high rating, the book has to be great." Big mistake. This is a good "chicks" book, but unless your one of the few men who really like going to see "chick flicks" with your wife, don't buy the hype.

"good story, bad diolog, terrible reader"
    Overall

Overall, I would say that it was a good story that drew me it. I agree with others that at times the diolog was lacking. The main characters often came off as 20 year old air-heads rather than powerful lawyers in Washington. This sense was made worse by the reader, especially how he read women's voices. Every woman came across as a total ditz, at times making almost painful to read. All said, the quality of the story overcame the other weaknesses.

  • 1812

The war of 1812 would either make America a global power sweeping all the way to the Pacific or break it into small pieces bound to mighty England. It was a second revolution of sorts to prove to the British that America had to be taken seriously. The principal players in this drama were James and Dolley Madison and Andrew and Rachel Jackson. Their courage and determination would shape America's destiny.

Thomas says: "Couldn't stand the narrator"
    "good, but no Shaara"
    Overall

For a lover of historical fiction, I really looked forward to this novel. Overall it was good, but disappointing. The author was too fixated on the sex lives of the characters, all of whom had no depth in their relationships other than physical attraction. It is a worthwhile listen, but keep your expectations down.

I have been an audible customer for several years, and this is one of the best books that I have listened to. Great story that is not at all predictable. I have recommended it to other friends who agree with my high assessment. Highest recommendations.

  • Rise to Rebellion: A Novel of the American Revolution

    • ABRIDGED (6 hrs and 1 min)

    • Narrated By Victor Garber
    Overall

    (56)
    Story

In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command - "Fire!" - as England's peace keeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a tumultuous trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred. Shaara's most impressive achievement yet, Rise to Rebellion reveals with new immediacy how a scattered group of colonies became the United States of America.

Michael says: "Great book hurt greatly as abridged"
"Great book hurt greatly as abridged"
    Overall

This is a great book which introduces you to historical characters and events in a new way and depth. Unfortuatly the abridged version can only tell of the events without letting you get to know the people behind the events, or the depth of the issues that drove them. If they ever release the unabridged version, I will gladly buy it and recommend it.

Ricky Colenso travels to Bosnia to volunteer as an aid worker. A few weeks later, he disappears and is never heard from again. In the fog of that horrible place, the killer, too, has vanished. In a world that has forgotten right and wrong, there are few like Cal Dexter who can settle the score. And so, years later, a worldwide chase is on and Dexter begins to draw a net around the killer. But this time the CIA must find a way to stop Dexter before his quest for vengeance throws the world into chaos.

    James says: "MASTERFULL"
"Fiction dangerously close to the truth"
    Overall

This is a well written story, with characters and plot that will draw you in, but beyond that, it deals with issues (terrorism, UBL, CIA rules of opperation) that are right off of today's headlines. It is a great story that will make you think about the issues that the inteligence community struggled with prior to 9-11.
