The four dead guards didn’t concern Mitch Rapp as much as the absence of the man they’d been paid to protect. Joe Rickman wasn’t just another foot soldier. For the last eight years Rickman had ran the CIA’s clandestine operations in Afghanistan. It was a murky job that involved working with virtually every disreputable figure in the Islamic Republic. More than a quarter billion dollars in cash had passed through Rickman’s hands during his tenure as the master of black ops and no one with a shred of sense wanted to know the details of how that money had been spent.

The only thing that could be better was if this novel was twice as long. I just hate it when a Mitch Rapp novel ends.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

Stumbled across this book and based on the reviews I took a chance. Really enjoyed the book even though I wished it was longer. The narration was well done and given that I'm a dog lover I could really relate to the story line.

When Nathan McBride receives a text message from someone who claims she’s been kidnapped, it triggers a deadly chain of events that has the potential to haunt him for the rest of his life. Nathan will soon learn that nothing from his past could ever prepare him for the crisis he’ll soon be facing. The girl’s name is Lauren and she’s just 12 years old.

    Story

Be forewarned, if you've never listened to Dick Hill portray female characters it's worse than having bad dental work. Every female voice is the same, nasally, weak sounding voice that you hear from actors imitating bimbos. What's worse is that one of the main character was a 12-yr old girl so there was no break from it. Two hours into the book I was hoping the girl would be kidnapped and halfway through I was praying she'd just be killed off so I wouldn't have to listen to that voice.

The story started off okay but gradually began to drag on. I'm sure the narration had something to do with it but this will most likely be my last Nathan McBride book. I know I won't be listening to anything else by Dick Hill unless the producers hire a separate actor to read the female parts.

A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified "dinery server" on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation: the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other's echoes down the corridor of history.

    Any additional comments?

Enjoyed the story but it's one of the few that would have worked better for me if I had read it via listening to it. It took me a while before I started to get the gist of what was happening and by then it would have been nice to "flip back" into the book and reference some of the earlier parts of the story.

Great narration though, top notch performances.

On an aside, the book convinced me NOT to pay money to watch the movie in the theater. I don't see how they can capture of book of this length and depth into a single movie. I'll wait for the DVD but to plan on watching it.
