"Turned me into a time traveller...."
I really felt I was living in Mississippi in 1962 while I was listening to this book. If I didn't have my earbuds in the story was going round and round in my head, my family lost me for about a week. The story flows really well and the narration is the most beauiful thing about the book. I want Aibileen in my life and I want to have a baby just so I can call her Maymobili and I want someone to call me "Baby" just the way that Stuart Whitworth calls Skeeter "Baby", but I am so glad that I live in a, hopefully, more enlightened age. I also loved that the ending was hopeful without being sugary. This book is an amazing listen.
"A Twist in the Tale"
I absolutely loved this twisting, turning tale from beginning to end. The characters were well drawn and sympathetic and Morton really brought war time England to life.
The main attraction of the novel, however, was the absolutely gripping tale of the family from Milderhurst Castle and how the past has affected their relationships and their futures. I was enthralled. I was totally shocked by the ending, and how the ending changed my perception of the characters and the motivations for their actions.
I thoroughly recommend this book.
"A harsh reality"
I almost backed out of this purchase when I read that it was an Oprah recommendation but,, having missed out on High School Faulkner due to an Australian education, decided it was worth the risk.
I was hooked from the start. The language is truly amazing and the narration superb. I felt like the book gave me a true sense of race and racism. What cold, tragic, loveless lives these people led.
"Is unputdownable a word?"
And I thought "Q&A" was brilliant....
This story is so cleverly told, everything is woven together brilliantly. I love Vikas Swarup, he is an amazing storyteller and manages to somehow imbibe a sense of hope into the most hopeless of situations and lives. He draws the class and caste contrasts beautifully and draws the reader into the lives of his characters completely.
I enjoyed the narration, although the American accent of our call centre hero did nothing for me. I am not American, so not an expert judge, but it didn't sound quite right to me.....
