There are some decent action sequences if you can completely suspend your disbelief.
The characters were wafer thin. There was nothing unique or interesting about any of them especially the cops. There was not much of a story, just a lot of contrived action and corny dialogue. There were so many things that people did that made no sense whatsoever it was laughable. I have liked most of Patterson's books in the past, but this was totally amateurish.
Having separate narrators perform each side of the story worked well. I found the person reading for the killer to be quite good. The other narrator had a tough time with voice for the female lead.
I would like to cut the two lead cops from the story and start over. I found them unlikeable and boring. I could really care less what happened to them at the end.
I have never written an online review in my life, but this book is so bad I just had to give my opinion this time.
I listened to several of the early Tempe Brennan novels and really enjoyed them, but I haven't listened to one since Monday Mourning. I thought I would give another one a try, but was disappointed in this effort. This story seemed very convoluted and didn't really create any excitement for me. Tempe seemed to be angry at nearly everyone the entire book, and missed clues you would think would be obvious to her.
This book seemed to focus as much on Tempe as a character as it did with the underlying story. I would like to see the story take a more prominent role. The constant breaks to deal with Tempe's personal life really impedes the novel from gaining any momentum. How many times did we here about Tempe's stomach doing somersaults?
Even, professional, ordinary
At the very end Reichs has Brennan give this long lecture on tolerance which I found very odd and out of place in this type of novel.
I found the ending very confusing. The motivation and actions of the killer or killers made little sense other than wrapping up the storyline.
Yes on McManus, No on Keller.
I don't think this book belongs in the genre it is supposed to be in. The story is all about rural West Virgina. The crime mystery is upstaged by the setting. The author describes a multitude of things in this book with great detail. It is interesting at first, but becomes mind numbingly tedious as the book goes on. The story could really have used some serious editing. You can tell that the author has some real writing talent, but she really comes up short when it comes to the plot.
She has a unique accent and tempo with her reading that I found very enjoyable.
Can we please cut Belfa, the main character, and start over? She is so unlikeable I found my self rooting for her demise.
There are so many things wrong with this book it is hard to pick out just a few. The story goes nowhere. The characters both good and bad do some of the dumbest things. The motivation of the characters is week.
The story was very original. The author did a great job of slowing building the story and creating suspense. There are quite a few twists and turns all the way to the very end.
I normally do not like stories that jump around from different time periods and different characters, but Barclay does a masterful job of using this to further the story and keep the listener guessing.
Nothing. The narrators are average.
No, it is not that type of book.
It passed the time during my commute.
No. It is not a bad book, but there are many better options.
She really struggled with the male characters, and over performed some of the dramatic moments in the book. I could have also done without the Boston accent.
Only on video. Some of the characters were quite interesting. I would like to see them performed by actors.
The novel seemed to struggle between being a thriller and a family drama, and in the end did neither one particularly well. I normally do not try and guess the endings of books, but this one seemed very obvious to me pretty early on. The story had some good moments, and moved along at a pretty good pace which was enough to keep my attention, but not on the edge of my seat.
