"much more than I expected"
I read/heard this book becuase I heard somewhere that it was an interesting book. I honestly expected to just stop listening after a while as I am normally highly allergic to even the slightest mention of Jesus or religon but this book managed to get past all those defenses that I though I had so well installed. I actually cried at the end of this book for how good it left me feeling. It was the sort of view of God that I had wanted and had never heard from anyone. It won't have me showing up at church anytime soon but it left me much more open and maybe willing to believe in a loving god. It was really a gift as the authors suggested and for that gift I am grateful.
"Not Just For Kids"
On the same level as Tolkien. This series has it all action, adventure, thrills, laughs and tears. It's themes, based around morality and theology, are worthy of discussion. At the same time the books are so entertaining. The authors reading couldn't be better and the actors reading the dialogue literally sounded just the way I imagined with out being overwrought. Can't wait for the promised "Book of Dust".
"Intriguing ideas. Lazy writing."
Everytime I picked it back up I had a hard time remebering what had happened before. There is a tremendous amout of words devoted to the gadgets and there workings and descriptions of the metaverse all very interestin and original. If you like that sort of thing this may be the book for you. There were some action packed moments and plenty of fight scenes, but a lot of exposition as well. A fair amount of the dialoge seems very contrived to give voice to the authors ideas and plot history to the point that it was sometimes hard to get a picture of what was going on. Maybe I missed something not having read the first book? This one was a near miss with potential for me.
"The Perfect Bookl!"
I loved THE KITE RUNNER and expected a lot form this author and wasnt' disappointed. Best wear sunglasses if you listen to this in public. I like to listen to books while I'm out walking and with this one I cried and bit my nails and mostly couldn't wait for my next chance to listen some more. This is the perfect book. I thought I knew a lot about the history and events that took place it Afganistan but this book was like living the history. It made me want to go home and hug my kids and be grateful for what I have and a lot more.
"Romancy but still worth it."
Great frame story with wonderfull naration for both characters. The contrast settings of circus and nursing home with great details and characters inhabiting both made it a worthwhile listen. At one point the plot got tied up a little too neatly for my taste but, ending was clever and quite satisfying nonetheless. Have to admit I was near the end of the book before I realized it was sort of a romance novel and at that point I was so intriged that it didn't matter.
"Surprisingly fun listen"
Ordered this one because it was cheap and was pleasantly suprised. Hit men and crime thrillers are not usually my thing but this one had just enough humor and plot twists to more than satisfy. The reader was perfect voice for Keller's ruminations on life death patriotism and pet ownership. Would have given five stars but it wasn't that deep. Still, great fun.
