With one or two exceptions, I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in this series ( My favorite being "Lothaire," and least favorite "Dark Needs at Night's Edge" in case you were wondering). While the series is admittedly formulaic, each story feels fresh and different. I am equally interested in the individual story of each book as I am with the larger picture. I can only imagine how Cole manages to keep the timelines and histories straight since there is so much interaction between all of the characters.
Anyway, what can I say, if you like the Immortals After Dark series, then you don't even have to think about adding this one to your collection. If you are new to the series, start at the beginning and enjoy. I will add that this story has a lot less action than some other books in the series, and most of the conflict is internal, so there's a lot of angst, etc. I enjoy a good personal struggle, so it worked out for me. Also, the soccer references and analogies were a little annoying at first, but I got used to them. While Macrieve isn't my favorite in the series, it was enjoyable, and as usual, Robert Petkoff did an excellent job with the narration. Oh! and there was a teaser at the end about Munro's story, which made me crazy since I'll be waiting forever to find out what happens with that! sigh.
This book was really enjoyable and soooo funny! If you are looking for a light, funny contemporary romance. This is your book. However, it started to feel really drawn out at the end and it got a bit sappy. The last couple of hours were certainly not as great as the first. Let's just say the climax of the story got put off too long. Ahem. The reader is great, and she definitely captures the spirit of the book. Overall, it was a delightful bit of fluff.
What to say about this one. Well, It has a lot of cliches, but I loved the science fiction alien elements. So I have a few warnings, but I'm definitely picking up the next book.
First with the cliches. This is a story of some studious average looking virgin girl who is swept off her feet by a some alpha overly controlling rich gorgeous man with a giant man part. And what do you know, he buys her a new wardrobe and she transforms into a beauty. Also, she kind of hates him, but he's irresistible and he won't let her go, so she accepts her fate. Or does she!? I won't give anything away (not that it's a super secret), but in the midst of the intrigue that develops, our heroine fails to ask a few obviously important questions, and is oddly naive and trusting. Personally, I prefer a more savvy leading lady, and I couldn't stomach her lack of common sense. I was rolling my eyes at her all over the place. Perhaps if more explanation of her thought process was given, I wouldn't have been so bothered, but you'd think as a psychology major, she'd have more insight into explaining behaviors or motives. And last but not least, I got seriously tired about hearing about what the characters ate, and the reader was meh (if you like the sample, that's about as good as it gets). End rant.
Okay, I'm done complaining. Now for the good part. The Aliens!! They are like some advanced race of vampire-like humanoid creature. I loved hearing about their culture, planet, technology, etc. The author did a great job of creating the alternate reality where we have some sexy aliens living along side the humans on Earth. This aspect of the story is really fresh and interesting. Although there wasn't a real cliffhanger at the end of this book, I am so curious about what happens next! I think this is the first published work by the author, so I'm sure the books will keep getting better and better. Overall, it was a fun listen, and I definitely think this book is worth a try.
I really didn't expect much from this book, so I was pleasantly surprised by my inability to stop listening! I can't say that it is the most polished book I've ever read, but any faults are forgivable due to the captivating plot.
Based on the book's description, I was a bit worried that the Shadow Agency would turn out to be a police force type of thing and the book might be a bit like a crime novel (which I personally detest), but this is not the case. So, if you too share my fears of boring police talk, fear not!
Another thing that's a book killer for me, is when the main couple gets too sweet. You start to feel like the awkward third wheel with an overly cute couple, and frankly it makes me want to gag a bit. This didn't happen either! I really liked the couple, especially since they were balanced. There wasn't one who was oh so super special compared to the other. They could both kick ass.
Basically, this was a fun, sexy, action packed, paranormal romance. It's not perfect, and sometimes things seemed to happen to easily for my taste, but in the end it's more like untapped potential rather than an annoyance. So, if you like paranormal romance you will undoubtably enjoy this one too!
WARNING: if you don't like sex in books, stay away from this one. Also, there's a cliffhanger at the end. Why are the book gods so cruel!
The premise of this book and, I assume the rest to follow, has already been done before. Basically, you have a group of some immortal man-creatures who are essential a police force that fight some evil immortal man-creatures who like killing humans. I have read/listened to books from several series that follow this pattern and they have been hit or miss. This one was a miss. After listening to the first 2 hours, and skipped ahead to see if it gets better, but I cannot go on.
The characters felt generic, and not enough conflict in the plot to keep me interested. As other reviewers have mentioned, this book comes off preachy about a healthy vegan lifestyle. I was a vegetarian for five years, and still support the lifestyle and even I found this annoying. The author's descriptions are often clunky, and if I had been reading the book, I think I would've given up much earlier. I could care less that the heroine uses Witch Hazel to clean the hero's woulds.
Now, after getting that out of my system, this book is not without merit, and I am clearly in the minority, if the number of positive have anything to say. It gives off a sort of slow moving, sweet vibe, and there's definitely a lot of back story about the characters. I couldn't finish the story, so maybe it gets better. In any case, this book was not for me.
