I did like this book but I loved Jeanette Walls' other books. This book was her first book of fiction and I felt the story was a little lacking. I can't really say why. It just left me wanting more. I had really high expectations for this book and it left me a little disappointed.
The Darkest Child was an amazing story! I fell in love with the main character Tangy Mae as she fight to get an education despite the many obstacle around her. Tangy Mae is a character with incredible strength and drive, who loves her family and will do anything for them despite the cost. It is a story of racism, poverty, abuse and survival. I loved this book, as it was very well written. It told a story that kept your attention and left you wanting more.
Bastards out of Carolina is one of my favourite stories. It is a story written from the point of view of Bone, a young girl growing up in South Carolina. It is a story of over coming obstacles and learning who to trust. It is very well written with a great cast of characters that are introduced as Bone interacts and finds strength in family. It is a must read!
