I had been through a couple of really bad books right after I finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (which I loved). I decided on this one as a lark and I am impressed. You won't be sorry. I do love a good vampire story that plays like a movie in my head.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sherif Walt Longmier (sp?) - the main character

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

I could listen to George read the phonebook.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I wanted to listen to the book in one sitting but I get anxious the closer I get to the end. I am really sad now because I have read all of them.

    Any additional comments?

Craig Johnson has created a set of characters the I feel like are my friends. Who would have thought that I would grow to love a sherif, his Native American best friend and his assistant sherif (from Philly), like good friends. I adore these books.

Psychiatrist Andrew Marlowe has a perfectly ordered life--solitary, perhaps, but full of devotion to his profession and the painting hobby he loves. This order is destroyed when renowned painter Robert Oliver attacks a canvas in the National Gallery of Art and becomes his patient. In response, Marlowe finds himself going beyond his own legal and ethical boundaries to understand the secret that torments this genius, a journey that will lead him into the lives of the women closest to Robert Oliver.

Good grief. Many, many words about not much. I stuck with this until I thought my ears were going to bleed. I may try it again later but I don't know if it was the reader or the story that turned into a gentle roar in my head. Either way, I give.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

This book has one of the truest voices of life in the south that I have read in a long time. You won't want to stop listening. Even when the book is over, you don't want to stop listening.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The best book club you’ve never heard of – but will be eager to join, courtesy of a full cast of true characters. January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb....

It may be difficult to imagine a life-affirming book which begins with the main character, a 14-year-old girl, recounting her rape and murder, but Alice Sebold's debut novel is just such a book. Having received advance critical acclaim that before now was reserved only for literary giants, this book will no doubt invite comparisons to works such as Tracy Chevalier's The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Toni Morrison's Beloved.

Susanne W. says: "Don't Pass It Up!!!"
"Writing a title makes me nuts."
    Overall

How energizing it is to finally read a book that is written for fiction book readers! Not dumbed down. It took me quite a while to decide to read this (and only did after my daughter raved about the book). I think it was the title that turned me off. Imagine a murder mystery where you really don't care what happened to the murderer because you are so involved with the the dead girl observing the living.
