After a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left almost broke, unemployed, and homeless. She reluctantly accepts to refurbish Birdsong, the old family place in Guthrie, Georgia. But, oh, is Dempsey in for a surprise. "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol - pink dump. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever.

Karen M. McGrady says: "Enjoyable Listening"
    "Mary Kay Andrews never disappoints!"

She has a true talent for portraying modern Southern life...I throughly enjoyed getting to know Dempsey Killebrew...great performance too!

Isabella, Mary, and Lauren are going to be bridesmaids in Kristi's wedding. On Sunday after Sunday, at bridal shower after bridal shower, they coo over toasters, eat tiny sandwiches, and drink mimosas. They're all happy for Kristi, but they do have the ups and downs of their own lives to cope with. Isabella is working at a mailing-list company, where she's extremely successful, and wildly unhappy. Mary is in love with a man who may never love any woman as much as he loves his mother. And Lauren, a waitress at a midtown bar, finds herself drawn to a man she's pretty sure she hates.

The story seems very disjointed and the characters come across as more than a little self involved...I didn't really care for this book very much.

Her marriage challenged by an insane, irresistible love affair, Julie decides to leave town and immerse herself in a new obsession: butchery. She finds her way to Fleischer's, a butcher shop where she buries herself in the details of food. She learns how to break down a side of beef and French a rack of ribs--tough, physical work that only sometimes distracts her from thoughts of afternoon trysts.

    Overall

I thought her first novel was very cute and enjoyed it. Now, after having listened to her new book, I find out they pushed back the release date of the book so that audiences would continue to see the Julie and Julia movie......this Julie is nothing like the sweet and zany Julie in the first book. She is whiny, self-indulgent and without morals.....SAVE YOUR CREDIT! Oh...and it also feels a bit like she tried to make this book a new version of Eat Pray Love (which is FANTASTIC)......she didn't succeed.

It's the week before Christmas, and antiques dealer Weezie Foley is in a frenzy to deck out her shop for the Savannah historical district decorating contest, which she intends to win. Weezie is ready to shoot herself with her glue gun by the time she's done, but the results are stunning. She's certainly one-upped the owners of the trendy shop around the corner, but suddenly things start to go missing from her display and there seems to be an uninvited midnight visitor to her shop.

I really LOVE Mary Kay Andrews and have been pleased with the audio versions of all her other books, but the narrator on this one is AWFUL....nothing worse than a BAD Southern accent and words and key names being repeatedly mispronounced...am going to try to listen to it again. My advice is to to the preview and make sure you can deal with the audio....alright...I'm going to try again...I am confident it's going to be a good book...but you know the audio in audiobook is a pretty important word! LOL

I hated for this book to end....I enjoyed it so much! I laughed, I cried and most of all, I identified with so many characters. Realistic, spot on and well written, this book rings true to my Southern Belle ears! Don't miss this one!

Against the sumptuous backdrop of Charleston, South Carolina, South of Broad gathers a unique cast of sinners and saints. Leopold Bloom King, our narrator, is the son of an amiable, loving father who teaches science at the local high school. His mother, an ex-nun, is the high school principal and a well-known Joyce scholar. After Leo's older brother commits suicide at the age of 13, the family struggles with the shattering effects of his death, and Leo, lonely and isolated, searches for something to sustain him

    Overall

I love books set in the South.....there is rarely one I don't like...but this one...the author's goal was apparently to use as many adjectives and adverbs as humanly possible in each and every sentence. You get so bogged down in the fifty word descriptions of everything, by the end of the sentence, you've forgotten what the point was. I also think he used the word "Charleston" about 500 times in the first five minutes. When your writing is good, you don't need such ridiculous prose and flowery words to make up for what is lacking. He tries too hard, or perhaps has gotten too confident. The themes are not new to his work, but repeats from past books. If you think of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil as the Prada of Southern literature, think of this book as the cheap knock-off they sell out of the trunks of beat up cars which look alright at first, but upon closer inspection, you realize it really says "Prado" ...**deep disappointed sigh**

Eloise Foley, known to her friends as Weezie, has been through the divorce from hell. Her ex-husband Tal (aka Talmadge Evans III) was awarded their house in Savannah's historic district, the house that Weezie had spent years painstakingly restoring to its original splendor. Weezie was awarded the two-bedroom carriage house on the same property. Each was sure the other would sell. But Tal has taken up residence in the main house with his new girlfriend Caroline DeSantos.
