  • Best of Bryson City: Stories of a Doctor's First Years of Practice in the Smoky Mountains

Walt Larimore was a young "flatlander" physician with a wife and three-year-old daughter when he set up his first practice in the little mountain hamlet of Bryson City, North Carolina. Schooled in the latest medical technology, the eager doctor discovered that there were some things in rural practice for which medical school just hadn't prepared him. He found his patients were often his best teachers, and his classroom ranged from hospital corridors and smelly barns to homey kitchens and mountain streams.

William says: "Not too bad, but...."

"Walt" reads his book well with a comforting friendly voice but I did not love his story. Not bad stories but I felt the book would have been better if the residents of Bryson City were used as the spring board for a fictional work. As it is we do not get to know anyone except "Walt" very well and have only a brush with the residents of Bryson City.

Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) ascended to the throne of Macedon at the age of 20. He fought his greatest battles, including the conquest of the mighty Persian Empire, before he was 25, and died at the age of 33, still undefeated by any enemy. His reputation as a supreme warrior and leader of men is unsurpassed in the annals of history.

Pressfield did such great work with the Spartans in "Gates of Fire" and Alcibiades in "Tides of War", that I expected a similar enthralling story of Alexander. Unfortunately I was a bit disappoiinted still enjoyed the story but found myself more confused at times than interested.

  • Hannibal: One Man Against Rome

This is the breathtaking adventure of the great Carthaginian general who shook the foundations of Rome. In the world's first "global" conflict, Hannibal Barca marched up and down the Italian peninsula for 18 years, appearing well nigh invincible to a Rome which began to doubt itself for the first time in its history.

Karen says: "Fascinating - not to be missed!"
    "Great Biography"

This is a well researched biography that the author masterfully crafts into a well told story. Not just of the man who was Hannibal but of the Roman and Punic Character. I HIGHLY recommend this to fans of military history or of Roman history.

Author of the beloved classic The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCullough creates sweeping sagas that are unparalleled in their drama and emotional grandeur. Now she carries listeners into the pageantry and passion, politics and intrigue of ancient Rome. Cunning and ambition were prized in this vast and powerful empire, but what would it take to win its highest honor, to be First Man in Rome?

Like the HBO series the author takes a great deal of liberty with the historical time line. Further the interactions and motivation of the historical figures, although not completely "factual" are fun to experience. This is a well told story with vivid characters set against an amazing time in history. I recommend listening to this story.
