Rob Inglis's narration is clear and crisp with characters finely enunciated--from the individual dwarfs to Bilbo, from Gandalf to the spiders and the dragon! This reading is better than any dramatization (although there are some good ones) because it combines the best of narration with the value of the unabridged text. Inglis also sings the poetry--haunting and stirring melodies performed beautifully. In a way, Inglis paints the text vocally in the manner that Alan Lee painted the text visually. I am thrilled that audible has made the recordings of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series available in the US. Worth every penny/credit!!
Laurie R. King makes 1920s Paris alive in this story of Harris Stuyvesant's search for young Pip Crosby. He follows Pip's trail through amusement parks, coffee shops, bookstores, an eccentric aristocratic mansion, a taxidermist's lab, and the gut-wrenching experience of the Theatre du Grand Guignol. Jefferson Mays's narration communicates the sounds, sights, and smells of a wide range of settings and characters. Mays gives voice to King's masterful storytelling. Dare we all hope that we'll hear and read more about Harris Stuyvesant? I do!
Elizabeth Hunter's series is clever--much more clever than many series in this genre. I read all of these before I found them on Audible, and I had a hard time putting them down. I was so excited that they were going to be available in audio format. Pearlman is not the best narrator for this series, though. Her voice, while pleasant enough, also has grating nasal tones. The story requires a wide range of accents and nuance, and Pearlman's voice is not up to the challenge.
I strongly recommend the story--and all the sequels. I do require a different narrator, though. Some people might not have trouble--listen to the samples before you buy.
As much as like the character of Atticus, I fell in love with this series because of Oberon, and I'm not even a dog person. The narrator does an excellent job creating the voices of the characters. Engaging story.
