Scott Brick did a fantastic performance.
Overall, this is a very good book with a lot of great ideas, but it's so darn wordy and melodramatic. This story could be cut down by 2/3.
Definitely worth checking out though and should be required reading/listening.
I would have liked a bit more coaching, but there are very good ideas that come at you every few minutes.
I can't do it. I downloaded this book because it's on all of the Greatest Books of All Time lists. It's too difficult to listen to, although the performance is very good. It's too disjointed and hard to follow unless you're in a quiet room all alone with Cliffsnotes by your side.
Very very good book. Provides lots of great facts and backstory. Fantastic narration and a great start if you want to learn about Lincoln.
I just finished listening to this book and there's a lot to like. Focusing on such a short period of such a long war gives you some amazing insight into the thought processes, failures and successes of the leaders at that time.
Some people complained about the narrator's habit of speaking with accents for the various players, but I appreciated it because there are so many names being thrown around that sometimes it's hard to remember which side they are on. What IS annoying is all of the French phrases being tossed in there...but you start to ignore them after a while.
Also, you should find and study a good map of France, Belgium and Germany, because you will be totally lost unless you have an understanding where these battles took place.
It's amazing to me how incredible Theodore Roosevelt's life was from the time he was born to the time he took the Presidency. This book is exhaustive in its detail (sometimes a bit too much), with fantastic citations and quotes that bring his experiences to life.
The performance of the reader was very good, but with some minor mispronunciations. Also, though he had a good imitation of Roosevelt's voice when quoting him, he often-times will make every other person's voice sound the same which can get confusing.
The story speaks for itself. It is a fantastic tale, dense with information, but vivid and charming. I can't wait to check out the other two books in the series...although I think I need a breather before tackling the next one.
