  • The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

    • UNABRIDGED (26 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Haruki Murakami
    • Narrated By Rupert Degas
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Toru Okada is going through a difficult time. He is without a job, his cat has disappeared, and his wife is behaving strangely. Into this unbalanced world comes a variety of curious characters, a young girl sunbathing in a nearby garden; sisters who are very peculiar indeed; an old war veteran with a violent, disturbing story. Okada retreats to a deep well in a nearby house. And the story unfolds.

    Shelley says: "Bizarre"
    "Hard to get in to"

I was disappointed by this one. Being a lover of Japanese culture, I have enjoyed other Japanese novels, but this one was just too weird for me. I'm not a fan of Kafka so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Parts of the novel are a bit pornographic and other parts drag on about the Japanese occupation of Manturia. I ended up abandoning it about one third of the way through.

  • Duma Key: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By John Slattery

A terrible accident takes Edgar Freemantle's right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. When his marriage suddenly ends, Edgar begins to wish he hadn't survived his injuries. He wants out. His psychologist suggests a new life distant from the Twin Cities, along with something else.

Amazon Customer says: "Play the Book and Let the Book Play You"
"one of my favorite audible downloads"

I love how weird Stephen King's writing has become. Take a sunny, happy place like the Keys and leave it to the King to make it horrific. As always, his character development is superb and the story keeps you hooked. If you like his post-accident work, you will not be disappointed with this one.

  • The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Michael Pollan
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

MCRedding says: "Great presentation of a moral dilemma"

This book was life changing for me. I thought I knew a lot about what I ate, but Michael Pollan opened my eyes to what I am putting in my mouth and my family's mouth . After listening to this book I became a full fledged vegetarian - that was about 10 months ago. I still cook meat for my family, but am much more thoughtful about what I buy. He can drone on a bit, however, and goes into more detail than necessary, at times.

  • The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Tarquin Hall
    • Narrated By Sam Dastor
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Dr. Suresh Jha, best known for unmasking fraudulent swamis and godmen, dies in a fit of giggles at his morning yoga class when goddess Kali appears from the mist and plunges a sword into his chest. The only one laughing now is the main suspect, a powerful guru named Maharaj Swami, who seems to have done away with his most vocal critic.

    Carolyn says: "Fun and entertaining"
    "light and different"

I enjoyed this book. It's very short and very light. I learned a lot about Indian culture.

  • The Informationist: A Vanessa Michael Munroe Novel, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Taylor Stevens
    • Narrated By Hillary Huber
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Vanessa “Michael” Munroe deals in information - expensive information - working for corporations, heads of state, private clients, and anyone else who can pay for her unique brand of expertise. Born to missionary parents in lawless central Africa, Munroe took up with an infamous gunrunner and his mercenary crew when she was just fourteen. As his protégé, she earned the respect of the jungle's most dangerous men, cultivating her own reputation for years until something sent her running. After almost a decade building a new life and lucrative career from her home base in Dallas, she's never looked back. Until now....

John C. says: "Strong premise & character descend into melodrama"
    "wannabe Lisbeth Salander"

This book has me rolling my eyes and cringing a lot. Stevens has made a dumb imitation of lisbeth salander in his main character. The writing is often hokey and the characters are two dimensional. Save your credits and listen to the "Dragon Tattoo" trilogy again.

  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: The Millennium Trilogy, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Stieg Larsson
    • Narrated By Simon Vance
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Pamela Murphy says: "COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN"
    "very dark"

Certainly a lot of intrigue - but overall, a very dark novel.

  • The Help

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Kathryn Stockett
    • Narrated By Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "melodic and touching"

The readers voices were melodic and beautiful, But the story and the characters themselves are what is truly beautiful. I loved, loved, loved this book.

  • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows
    • Narrated By Paul Baymer, Susan Duerden, Roselyn Landor, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: The best book club you’ve never heard of – but will be eager to join, courtesy of a full cast of true characters. January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb....

Kent says: "MUCH better than I ever expected! Give it a try!"
    "great audiobook"

Of all the audiobooks I've heard, i think this is the one that most lends itself to the audio format. I loved listening to the different voices in the novel. It was moving - uplifting and heartbreaking, a true pleasure to hear.

  • Tea Time for the Traditionally Built: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Alexander McCall Smith
    • Narrated By Lisette Lecat
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When she asks her dependable husband, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, to fix her tiny white van, Precious Ramotswe fears he might just sell the vehicle and buy her something more modern. And so he does. But this will not do. So Precious tries to track her beloved van down - and learns it has already been stolen from its new owner.

    Carl says: "Fun Like Always"
    "beautiful prose"

This series of books is my happy place. Okay, I've never been to Africa and might very likely be shocked if I were to go, but to think that a place like Mma Ramotswe's Botswana exists just makes me feel better, especially at the end of a long and hard day. Oh please, Mr. MCall Smith, give us more.

  • Inkheart

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Cornelia Funke
    • Narrated By Lynn Redgrave

Imagine it were possible to bring the characters from a book to life. Not like when you listen to an audiobook with such enchantment that the characters seem to jump off the pages and into your bedroom...but for real. Imagine they could actually climb out of the pages and into our world. Then imagine if those characters brought their world into ours.

    Cynthia Lee Reneau says: "EXCELLENT!!"

As a middle school teacher I am exposed to a lot of YA literature, some of which I really enjoy. This book, however, was not one of them. There was a lot of superficial violence which I suppose was to try and build suspense but, really, the book just kept dragging on. Eventually, I just gave up and stopped listening.

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 32 mins)

Like never before, you can experience the beauty and life-changing power of the Bible. Kathleen says: "ANGELS not zombies"
    "bad sound quallity"

I agree with the other critiques of this audio version of the new testament; the sound quality is poor and the acting is awkward. It just sounds low budget. A disappointment.
