  • Citizen of the Galaxy

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Robert A. Heinlein
    • Narrated By Lloyd James

Citizen of the Galaxy takes place far in the future, when the human race has spread out to colonize other planets. In a slave market in the capital of Jubbul and the Nine Worlds, an auctioneer announces, "Lot 97. A boy." Slavery is commonplace in Jubbul, and the sight of the ragged, starving boy, Thorby, on the auction block is not unusual. What does puzzle bystanders and Thorby himself is his purchase by crippled Baslim, the beggar who sits every day in a corner of the marketplace.

    L. says: "One of Heinlein's best"
Would you listen to Citizen of the Galaxy again? Why?

First, I do own a television, nor do I care to blindly sit in front of the idiot box and allow my mind to turn to spittle!

That said...this book is great! On a cool fall night, I love to bring a cup of tea into my warm nest, and listen with my mind's eye to a great adventure...Citizen of the Galaxy is a tale I will listen to again and again!

What did you like best about this story?

The evolution of Thorby from slave boy to the most powerful guy in the solar system!

Which character – as performed by Lloyd James – was your favorite?

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Thorby would not sign the deceptive releases by the shyster, Uncle Jack!

    Any additional comments?

Audiobook stories allow one's mind to expand and grow! Heinlein has caused my mind to expand alot with this one!

  • Intercept: A Novel of Suspense

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Patrick Robinson
    • Narrated By Charles Leggett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A left-leaning judge liberates four of the most dangerous al-Qaeda terrorists from Guantanamo Bay and the CIA field officers track them back to Pakistan's northwest frontier mountain range. But the men vanish and rejoin the dark and mysterious forces trained by Osama bin Laden high in the Hindu Kush. These are men with hatred for the United States and Great Britain, and they are sworn to hit back at the USA, which imprisoned so many of their high command.

Mark Laskow says: "Bottom Decile Writing"
    "Uncommonly, fantastically, absolutely GREAT!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Intercept to be better than the print version?

The narrator brings the words TO LIFE!

What other book might you compare Intercept to and why?

Another fantastic book by Patrick is TO THE DEATH. Wonderful story...full of details that make the story come alive!

What does Charles Leggett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I suffer from chronic pain (from a spinal injury) and from chronic atypical migraine headaches (both from an auto accident). Consequently, I have a lot of "down time", where I have to retreat to a cold, dark room for up to 5 days at a time. Thank the Lord, I can still listen to music or books, and audiobooks have provided many hundreds of hours of diversion for me. The narrator, Charles Leggett, has a God-given ability to take the words, and the intent of the words by the author, and make those words COME ALIVE, and turn those into an "audio masterpiece"! I don't watch TV, choosing to listen to radio, music and audiobooks instead. I wll certainly listen to more of Mr Leggett's narration...if the source material interests me, that is!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Too many to list!

    Any additional comments?

The perfect narrator for this book by Patrick Robinson!

  • Space Cadet

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Robert A Heinlein
    • Narrated By David Baker

Matt Dodson arrives at Space Academy little prepared for the rigorous program he is about to enter. But that’s the point of the academy: to take young men and steep them in a demanding tradition of honor, courage, and sacrifice until they have earned the right to join the Patrol as guardians of the solar peace. Unfortunately, even the academy’s high power training can’t completely prepare Matt and his friends Tex and Oscar for the harrowing test of both survival and diplomatic skills they will face when a mission goes disastrously wrong.

DocJim says: "Nothing better than Heinlein performed by a cast!"
"Avid listener of FCA stuff...but this?"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    The BOOK is OK!

What other book might you compare Space Cadet to and why?

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The FCA team just did not seem as "enthused" about this book as they were in The Star Beast and The Rolling Stones, for example. In TSB and TRS, the narration make the books come alive! In SC, the narration seemed, to me, dull...kinda like they were just "reading the book"!

What character would you cut from Space Cadet?

None! The BOOK is great! My Son and I have read Space Cadet probably 50 times during my life!

    Any additional comments?

In Full Cast Audio's productions of The Star Beast and The Rolling Stones, Podkayne of Mars, The Red Planet and Farmer in The Sky (all by Robert Heinlein), the cast made those books become more alive than any Hollywood movie ever could! However, in SC (which I was chomping at the proverbial bit awaiting FCA's release) the cast just did not seem quite "right" for the book, in my opinion. Perhaps it is because my son and I don't watch TV, and listen to audiobooks instead (we listen together! I like them as much as he does!), and the fact that we have listened to The Star Beast, The Rolling Stones, Farmer in the Sky, The Red Planet and Podkayne of Mars so often that we were just expecting the quality of those productions from Full Cast Audio...or...maybe we have just listed to those too much! We WILL listen to Space Cadet again and again, I am sure! My son and I will spend many more hours together istening to the FCA stuff, from Heinlein and others...overall, Full Cast Audio cannot be beat!
