What did you love best about The Keeper of Lost Causes?

That's my guide - plain and simple. Does it hook me pretty soon? Do I get excited at the thought of taking it up again? This one did it for me - I kept thinking - find her! Find her! If I'm that into it - it's usually pretty good. Isn't that what you want in a good mystery?

Tia and Mike Baye never imagined they'd become the type of overprotective parents who spy on their kids. But their 16-year-old son, Adam, has been unusually distant lately, and after the suicide of his classmate, Spencer Hill they can't help but worry. They install a sophisticated spy program on Adam's computer, and within days they are jolted by a message from an unknown correspondent addressed to their son: "Just stay quiet and all safe."

Meanwhile, Betsy Hill is struck by a photo that appears to have been taken on the night of her son's death...and he wasn't alone.

I really liked the premise of this book - kids and parents and computing. How worried the parents are and the moral choices they must make. But I found the unrealistic intertwining of the lives of all the characters too contrived. At the end I remember thinking, "Are you kidding me? This could have been so good!!!"

That said, it will probably be made into a movie. Isn't that why we all read? Most movies these days stink.

This book could have been great.

The bodies of four men have been discovered in the town of Bradfield. Enlisted to investigate is criminal psychologist Tony Hill. Even for a seasoned professional, the series of mutilation sex murders is unlike anything he's encountered before. But profiling the psychopath is not beyond him. Hill's own past has made him the perfect man to comprehend the killer's motives. It's also made him the perfect victim. A game has begun for the hunter and the hunted.

What did you like best about The Mermaids Singing? What did you like least?

I'm all in for the violent murder. I watch true crime on TV and most of what I listen to here involves a murder. But this was unnecessarily sick. Shock value to make up for average writing? I think the title was more intriguing than the book.

And the mystery wasn't that great a mystery. I also wondered why the narrator often said he when she was the correct pronoun. At first I found it confusing, then I thought maybe it was a reference to all the gender bending. Then I decided I might be losing my mind. I still have no clue.

I'd say there are loads of better books out there. No need to subject yourself to these really gross descriptions of sadism and torture.

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

What made the experience of listening to NOS4A2 the most enjoyable?

This was a good horror romp (the main character should have died like 5 times, but what the heck). What really made it memorable was the narration. I could just see the creepy characters while listening to her. A fantastic performance. And Joe Hill has a wonderful imagination just like his Pop. If you like creepy, you'll like this.

Declaring he needs to clear his conscience, a dying man walks into Scotland Yard and confesses that he killed his cousin five years earlier during the Great War. When Inspector Ian Rutledge presses for details, the man evades his questions, revealing only that he hails from a village east of London. With little information and no body to open an official inquiry, Rutledge begins to look into the case on his own. Less than two weeks later, the alleged killer’s body is found floating in the Thames, a bullet in the back of his head.

If you could sum up The Confession in three words, what would they be?

I don't like these canned questions, so I'm just going to tell you why this book was great. I didn't think I would like some old British war story. Not that it's a war story - not really, but as soon as the war was mentioned, I groaned.

    I'm glad I kept listening.

I couldn't wait to find out what the heck was going to happen next. Todd did a great job of creating this air of menace and creepiness. And the twists and turns! By the time I saw it coming, it was all over. A great mystery, outstanding writing - I couldn't wait to keep listening.

  • Chocolate Wars: The 150-Year Rivalry Between the World's Greatest Chocolate Makers

With a cast of characters that wouldnt be out of place in a Victorian novel, Chocolate Wars tells the story of the great chocolatier dynasties, through the prism of the Cadburys. Chocolate was consumed unrefined and unprocessed as a rather bitter, fatty drink for the wealthy elite until the late 19th century, when the Swiss discovered a way to blend it with milk and unleashed a product that would conquer every market in the world.

What disappointed you about Chocolate Wars?

I agree with several of the other reviewers - needs a professional narrator. BUT I'm not sure that could really save this. I'm barely into and all it seems to be is a diatribe against evil capitalism. Things were great in the happy Cadbury plant until evil Kraft came just to make filthy money!

If things were so fabulous and peaceful, why were the workers unionized? Maybe as the book progresses, this will be answered, I just don't think I can hang in there long enough to find out! I'm going to try again and if I find anything redeeming, I will update this review.

I an fascinated with the chocolate industry so I was very disappointed by this. Much better is the Emperors of Chocolate.. And you just can't beat CandyFreak by Steve Almond.

If you could sum up Broken Harbor in three words, what would they be?

    Haunting, fascinating, unforgettable.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I kept trying to figure it out - I don't want to give anything away, but the creepiness of the holes in the wall.......Tana French is amazing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no - only because it gave me something to look forward to everyday. I couldn't wait to hear what was going to happen next. I'm sorry it ended!

    Any additional comments?

If you enjoy Tana French, you'll love it. If you enjoy mysteries, you love it. If you like police stories, you'll love it. If you like psychological drama, you'll love it. This is a great, great book!!!

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

What made the experience of listening to Dark Places the most enjoyable?

I just couldn't figure it out! So it was exciting to hear the next piece of the puzzle.

    Any additional comments?

This is definitely a dark book, but if you expect anything else from the family axe murder description, well...... I love a good mystery and the jumping back and forth in time was a very interesting way to tell the story. I really liked it - give me a good mystery and some psychological drama - I'm in!

I always know an audiobok is great when I can't wait to get back to it. this was one of those. I also vividly saw the places and characters. Loved it!

Lawrence Sanders's masterpiece, The First Deadly Sin, set a standard for today's novels of psychological suspense. Now, retired Captain Ed Delaney returns to a distinctly urban milieu of paranoia and impulsive violence to solve a brutal murder that shocks New York's unshockable art world. The victim is Victor Maitland. Long-considered one of the world's greatest artists, he excelled in capturing the beauty of life on canvas. In private, he destroyed whomever he pleased: his wife, his son, his mistress, his dearest friends and family.
