One of the earliest novels in English, Moll Flanders is the purported autobiography of a heroine who is undoubtedly one of the most lively, convincing, and delightful rogues in literature. Born in Newgate Prison and orphaned soon after, Moll is provided with no opportunities in life, yet she is propelled by an unrelenting drive to overcome her background of impoverishment.

Excellent reading, easy to listen to and differentiate the characters. While I am no expert on English accents, Moll Flanders' accent seems appropriate, and I loved listening to it.

As Maggie Tulliver approaches maturity she enters into conflict with family and community over her desire for self-fulfillment. Eliot's exploration of Maggie's dilemma makes this novel as relevant today as it was in the 19th century.

This reading is excellent, with characterization shown through the use of different voices with realistic accents.

Dr. Frankenstein learns the secret of imparting life to inanimate matter. To test his theories, he collects bones from the charnel-houses to construct a "human" being, and then gives it life. The creature, endowed with supernatural size and strength, is revolting to look at, and frightens all who see it. Lonely and miserable, it comes to hate its creator. The monster murders Frankenstein's brother and his bride, and flees. The doctor pursues his creation in order to destroy it.

    "Voice is a monotone"
    Overall

I chose this particular audio version of Frankenstein because it was the shortest. That was a bad idea! Tom Casaletto uses a monotone voice, with little expression. He does use an accent, but I found the reading difficult to keep my mind on because it was so dull. This is the only audio book in which I haven't felt that the reading enhanced the novel. Next time I will listen to samples before choosing the version. The novel itself is a great read, and it's surprising how different it is from the movie versions that have been made from it.
