I've liked all the others, but I finally gave up on this one as the heroine was too gullable and clueless, which drove me crazy.
This story was long enough to actually develop the characters and therefore to develop the story. The characters honestly struggled with everyday sorts of issues of right and wrong and gray. I gave it only 4 stars because I wanted more closure on some of the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so that I wish there were a sequel, but maybe there is but just not in audio form. Liked it well enough that I may look that up!
I love the work of Jack Chalker, and Downtiming the Nightside is one of my favorite. Like most of his works, the twists and turns of plot and characters will keep you fascinated and guessing from one chapter to the next all the way to the end. I have reread most of his works more than once. Now I can listen to them.
It is hard to write a memorable moment of Chalker's work without spoiling it for a new reader. The premise of most of his writings seems to be "reality is not necessarily fixed and may change at any moment."
It was a hard book to turn off and a joy to come back to.
I am looking forward to the audio publication of more of Jack L Chalker's. work.
I was glad I had listened to the previous book in this series or I wouldn't have understood much of what was happening. I was very frustrated when it came to the end, though, as very little had been resolved and much was left hanging for another book. I'd wait until the next one is published and then read all three in a row, as the story itself is decent.
Too frequently stories are romance novels, or mysteries, or some other "type" of novel, but "A Good Woman" was just what I was looking for, ie. just a really good, well-developed story. I enjoyed it thoroughly and had an easy time following along, even through the stop and start of listening that inevitably occurs in the course of only listening while traveling back and forth to work. The story had good character development and was believable. I've even recommended it to my husband, because it isn't just a "chick" story either, even though it comes from a female's viewpoint.
