This modern classic of military history has been called "one of the most important personal accounts of war that I have ever read" by distinguished historian John Keegan. Author E.B. Sledge served with the First Marine Division during World War II, and his first-hand narrative is unsurpassed in its sincerity. Sledge’s experience shows in this fascinating account of two of the most harrowing and pivotal island battles of the Pacific theater.

If you want to know what the brave men of the US Marines experienced in defeating the Japanese, this is the book to read. It is agonizing to get through because it conveys the agony of a line Marine. It is a book you will be unable to purge from your mind - ever. This book was also the basis for the HBO Series "The Pacific." When one compares the two, it becomes clear that "The Pacific" focused on the dark side of the US Marines and soft peddled the atrocities of the Japanese. Shameful.

  • The Narcissist Next Door: Understanding the Monster in Your Family, in Your Office, in Your Bed - in Your World

Narcissists are everywhere. There are millions of them in the United States alone: entertainers, politicians, business people, your neighbors. Recognizing and understanding them is crucial to your not being overtaken by them, says Jeffrey Kluger, in his provocative new book about this insidious disorder. With insight and wit, Kluger frames the surprising new research on narcissism and explains the complex, exasperating personality disorder.

What would have made The Narcissist Next Door better?

Any practical advice around how to manage a relationship with a Narcissist that you are obliged to be in.

What was most disappointing about Jeffrey Kluger’s story?

The author used the book as a platform to castigate celebrities, professional athletes, business leaders and other public figures. The tone of the comments was hateful. He saved his deepest disdain for Republican or conservative politicians, torturing explanations to find fault with these while excusing Democratic or liberal contemporaries. Without the benefit of direct knowledge, he offered pop-culture psychological diagnosis on these targets more befitting of the National Enquirer than a serious work on this affliction.

How could the performance have been better?

    No issues, well read.

    Any additional comments?

One particularly amusing section of the book was the authors tortured logic in excusing the "Baby-Boom" generation from the Narcissist label. I'd guess this originates from the fact that he is one.

  • Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed

    Story
    (286)

In his million-copy best seller Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond examined how and why Western civilizations developed the technologies and immunities that allowed them to dominate much of the world. Now in this brilliant companion volume, Diamond probes the other side of the equation: what caused some of the great civilizations of the past to collapse into ruin, and what can we learn from their fates?

Rebecca says: "an fascinating book, but better on paper"
    "Engaging"
    Overall

This book is an engaging review of historic collapses of civilizations. The author can't quite hide his left-leaning environmental orientation, but still keeps the book reasonably centered. It would be a good read for kids in school as it demonstrates that the long historic record of mankind is that he is not a steward of his environment.

I listened to this book four times to date. This book lays out history in a completely new and insightful way and provides razor sharp insight into what is going on in society now and what is to come. It is at once hopeful and terrifying.

  • The Birth of Plenty: How the Prosperity of the Modern World Was Created

In the breakthrough spirit of Against the Gods, William Bernstein's The Birth of Plenty has the topical uniqueness and storytelling panache to literally create its own category and reader. Based upon the premise that mankind experienced virtually zero economic growth from the dawn of time until 1820, this provocative, big-picture book identifies the four conditions necessary for sustained economic progress.

This book explains - in plain English - why some societies prosper and others stagnate in poverty. It should be a must read in all schools in America.

  • This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly

    Story

Throughout history, rich and poor countries alike have been lending, borrowing, crashing - and recovering -their way through an extraordinary range of financial crises. Each time, the experts have chimed, "this time is different" - claiming that the old rules of valuation no longer apply and that the new situation bears little similarity to past disasters. This book proves that premise wrong.

    D. Littman says: "necessary piece to understand the current crisis"

This book is essentially a description of the massive data set these two researchers have compiled that will serve as the basis of hundreds of papers and inquiries. If you expect more, you'll be disappointed.

  • A Brief History of Time

This landmark book is for those of us who prefer words to equations; this is the story of the ultimate quest for knowledge, the ongoing search for the secrets at the heart of time and space. Its author, Stephen W. Hawking, is arguably the greatest mind since Einstein. From the vantage point of the wheelchair, where he has spent the last 20 years trapped by Lou Gehrig's disease, Professor Hawking has transformed our view of the universe. A Brief History of Time is Hawking's classic introduction to today's most important scientific ideas.

I suppose Hawking boils down his world to the simplest, most basic concepts, but once we drifted into quantum mechanics it became difficult to follow. Well, at least now I know what I don't know.

    Story
    (26)

In this hard-hitting call to arms, Dick Morris and Eileen McGann reveal the hundreds of ways American taxpayers are routinely fleeced - by our own government; by foreign countries like Dubai that are gobbling up American interests and spending millions to influence government decisions and American public opinion; by Washington lobbying firms that are pushing the agendas of corrupt foreign dictators on Capitol Hill; and by hedge-fund billionaires collecting huge tax breaks, courtesy of the IRS.

Richard J. Plaga says: "Way Way Way too long"
    "Almost Credible"
    Overall

Morris makes the same tragic mistake of many partisan commentators. He crosses the line of credibility - only so slightly. He takes facts to the stretched interpretation and does not even hint at the opposite point of view. Debates are won in the end not through rhetoric, but through substantive weight. This book COULD HAVE BEEN a credible contribution to the ongoing debate for the soul of America, but it just misses.

    Richard says: "Semi Effective"
    "Semi Effective"
    Overall

I've been studying Russian for 5 years using primarily audio books. This book suffers from the same malady as all the others I have used to date - it does not explain the grammar behind the language at all. Words change between sentences and there is no explanation. This would be OK if there was sufficient repetition using the same words, but there is not. The book will build vocabulary a bit and provide some catch phrases, but you will not know Russian.
