I really like this book. It's one of my favorite in the series and I had an extra credit so I thought I'd listen to it. The narrator isn't bad. She does Jean Claude in a good French accent, which surprised me. I did NOT like the sound effects. They took away from the dialog and made me think of B-movie suspense moments and bad porno music. It doesn't ruin it, but i was glad I read the book before I listened to it.
When reading a review of an audiobook, I really want to know what people thought of the narrator. A bad narrator can ruin a good book... Stephanie Wolf is okay on the whole. I found her portrayal of Lissa's voice very annoying (high pitched and whiny), but her Russian accent for Dimitri was really good. A separate note: I really like this series. I highly recommend it along with Mead's two other series (for adults).
This book is the first book in the series that has too much sex. I really like the series as a whole. I like the depth/detail in Laurrell K's writing and I like the world she has created complete with its characters and powers and politics. If you haven't read/listened to the books earlier in the series, you wont understand half of what is going on here or get an appreciation of the characters, so dont bother. Truly this book has very little plot and is more about setting up relationships and the power structure of the main characters. This book and the next couple after it all have quite a bit of sex, but the series balances out after that. If you like the genre, I'd highly recommend the series FROM THE BEGINNING. The narrator, Cynthia Holloway is quite good. Better than the one who did a couple of the earlier books.
