I usually don't enjoy Updike's books but keep trying to discover why he is so highly regarded! My efforts paid off. This is a most enjoyable book. The narrator did a great job with the various speakers, Ahmad uses a stiff precise English, Mr Levey a proper Northeast Jewish accent. Also the producer has done a great job; a preacher's voice sound over a loud speaker system and a phone call has the proper tinny quality.
I almost never listen to a book twice, if I did this would be it.
Although it featured teens suffering through love and loss, I weptt for us senior folks watching our beloved ones slip into dementia or other age related ills. It was a universal story
Perhaps Dad, a solid, quiet, wise sufferer and lover.
The matching of a girl in the 19th and 20th centturies in the same situation.
Nimph.Dorothy,Vivian it was her story and she lived it well
I did cry when Vivian lost her husband and gave up her child
Yes and I would like to recommend it for young adults but a few graphic sexual descriptions rule it out. And I felt they were gratuitous. A great premise, Jesus' alter ego and buddy, the story of the "hidden years" could be accurate Tying in the Magi was very clever.. I really enjoyed the references to present day subjects, like the Yeti and even Thanksgiving. I loved tongue in cheek comments like the Bhuddist Master developing defence fighting for the non-aggressive Jewish boys and naming it after what would a Jew do? ie Judo.
I don't think I have heard this narrator before but he was remarkable, throwing in Asian,Indian and especially Yiddish accents for appropriate characters
PossiblyMary Magdeline as she was presented in a totally different light than I have ever seen before.
The most enjoyable and informative book I have ever read
The author's skill at combining personal and acedemic views of experiences.
The Mass for the Dead
things we should all know for a better world.
The Viet Nam War was "my" war, I loved and love the boys/men who journeyed there. I have never understood them (or my father in WW2). I am so much closer to that now and have learned so much about humanity. The reader was perfect
Truth in petting
Any of the authors even handed presentation of animal rights issues
The Human/Animal Bond ??
As a veterinarian of 52 years I have always wondered about many of these issues and just never taken the time to explore them.
yes, there are many oints i would like to review regarding autism and imaginary friends
Boodo, of course, but Oswald and Mrs Gosk are close seconds
Pacing, as an audio book, I can't jump ahead which is my evil tendency
Dee or Sal so we could eat "fast food"
i like books that open up child's minds. Like "Room" or "The Curious Case of Dog at Night' and this was a winner in that genre.
Actually this was the second time, yes probably once more as it is a timeless story
Conroy's "Great Santini" whose characters were as unlikeable as these were likeable. Both were tinged with Catholicism, honor, duty, concience
Probably Pig because he was so complex
it made my insides twist, what is right or wrong in what circumstance?
Pat Conroy never fails to satisfy.
absolutely, a young adult or an adult read that acurately depicts the Viet Nam war era. A great Grandparent/grandchild story to share.
The truth of the human/animal bond, the accuracy of portrayal of the politics of the era. I was 19 around the time the protaginist was 19 so to me it was a story of my "coming of age" The method of interspersing the dog's thought with the humans was masterful.
well paced narration
no, I needed to digest the events as they progressed.
I have read MANY Viet Nam war stories and this one is highly accurate and very appealing to all ages. I think it is the best I have read.
an opportunity to understand a different culture
the recurring comment they had been let down by the Americans
coming of age in Thailand
this part of American history has been buried and these people deserve a voice
I was amazed how much this book captured my thoughts, it wasn't a subject I had ever considered but the author persued a culture and a way of life and existance that is totally alien to me. However the humanity was the same as anywhere else. Very well drawn characters, Forrest Gump set of various political and social situations but NO humor. I would highly recommend it to someone who wants a very different experience.
