I've always wanted to learn more about the Roman Empire and how it is similar to the U.S. This lecture series did a great job of explaining how we view ourselves from within and how the world views us.
I liked the start but the end got too religious for me. I wasn't expecting that. The theme as I took it is to get going and try each day. You will get better and succeed. Ignore the small things getting in your way and dedicate time. His discussion about the "professional" was the best part of the book. The end fell flat...
Lots of great information. Only problem is, at times, the lecturer trails off his sentences and you miss the last few words. Had to hit that replay key too many times. Besides that good lecture.
I really like Professor Drout in the Modern Scholar series. I have listed to 4 or 5 of them. Of all of them, this was by far the hardest to listen to. But, I think it is probably me instead of the book. I never would have thought grammer would be interesting either, but that lecture was outstanding. Literature, I hoped for the same, but just couldn't get there. Again, maybe me. Try the history of the English language instead.
Very entertaining and a fun listen. I highly recommend. I have questioned many stories I recall or have been told since listening to this audiobook.
Good read from a knowledgable lecturer but the audio in the first few lectures is terrible. I think this was an early lecture in the series.
Great introduction to the three religions, their similarities and differences. My only addition would be a lecture of the various splits or sects in each. It was briefly discussed throughout the series but more detail would have been a great addition. Besides that, a great listen.
This was my first audiobook lecture by Drout. I have now bought several others as he is a great speaker and story teller. I really enjoyed this look back in history and learned more than I anticipated about the Anglo-Saxons both as it was and how the modern world see them.
Drout is great as always in explaining how the English language has evolved to become the international of today. He is a terrific speaker.
Great lecture! This should be required for all of our politicians so they understand what they are dealing with in Europe, middle east and the rest of the world.
