Mike Wingate had a rough childhood  —  he was abandoned at a playground at four years old and raised in foster care. No one ever came to claim him, and he has only a few, fragmented memories of his parents. Now, as an adult, Mike is finally living the life he had always wanted  —  he’s happily married to Annabel, the woman of his dreams; they have a precocious eight-year-old daughter, Kat.

Janice says: "Edge of my seat."
    "Great mystery read!"

I had never before read any of Gregg Hurwitz's books, but I actually saw this book advertised elsewhere and decided to buy and download it. I couldn't stop listening to it and hated it when the book ended. I haven't felt like that about a book in a long time! I personally was very impressed with the writing and am looking forward to reading more of his work. Hope I'm as happy with the others as with this one. Try it if you like a good mystery! Would love to have these characters return in a follow-up, perhaps.

Maybe it's because I live in Tennessee or maybe it's because I know ladies just like these ladies -- but I found these "Diva" books to be delightful, silly, and fun. They are murder mysteries but certainly different than any I've read/heard before. For those of you who are looking for intellectual, SERIOUS, thought-provoking books, maybe these aren't for you. But for those of you over-40 women who may have experienced a hot sunny summer afternoon of teenaged silliness with your girlfriends, having a Sonic frozen drink with a little boost while laying in the pool (problems put on hold for an afternoon) ... then you are going to love these books. For those of you who have NOT experienced that, for heaven's sake, do so soon! And listen to these books!

  • Betrayal of Trust: J. P. Beaumont Series, Book 20

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By J. A. Jance
    • Narrated By J. R. Horne
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

At first glance, the video appears to be showing a childish game: a teenage girl with dark wavy hair smiles for the camera, a blue scarf tied around her neck. All of a sudden things turn murderous, and the girl ends up dead. It’s as bad as a snuff film can get, and what’s worse, the clip has been discovered on a phone that belongs to the grandson of Washington State’s governor. However, the boy, who has a troubled background, swears that he’s never seen the victim before.

    elynore says: "Good mystery thriller"
    "Kept me guessing ..."

Personally, I found this book to be very enjoyable -- if you like murder mysteries, which I do, then I think you will too. I had never listened to the J.P. Beaumont Series of books before and if they are all this entertaining, then I know I've got 19 others I can enjoy -- since this is Book 20, apparently. I'm always amazed by the different reviews for a book -- I'm reading them and thinking, hey, this is right up my alley and then BOOM somebody invariably (or several somebodies) will write a really bad review. I guess that's just another example of how we are all different. I would recommend this book. I like it.

  • The Help

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Kathryn Stockett
    • Narrated By Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and others

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"

This was absolutely one of the BEST -- if not THE best book -- I've ever read/listened to. I hated it when the book ended. I just saw where the movie is coming out in a week or so and I WILL be seeing this movie. While listening to this book I had the gamut of feelings -- shame not being the least of them -- just wondering if I had ever treated anyone in that manner in my entire life. And if I did, God forgive me. Reminded me of some kids I grew up with who had a maid -- something I never experienced or knew about -- and I remember stopping by their house every weekday to walk to school with the girls of the house. Their maid answered the door and I never understood that whole thing until this book!! And that's been 47 years ago!! Wow. Don't miss this one. If you have a heart at all, you will cry, laugh, smile, wonder.

  • The Passage: The Passage Trilogy, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (36 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Justin Cronin
    • Narrated By Scott Brick, Adenrele Ojo, Abby Craden
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

Nicole says: "You love it or you hate it..."
"The Passage -- good read (listen)"

I found this to be an entertaining read. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I didn't get the feeling I was reading (or listening) to a vampire novel. The premise seemed like something that could happen -- frightening but interesting. I found myself doing things that were compatible with "listening" so I could find out what happened next -- like taking a long bath or cleaning the kitchen. I LIKED IT. Well worth two credits - happy I got it for one.
