actually, i could probably listen to tull narrate a 14-hour ping-pong match between aubrey and maturin and enjoy myself. however, this wasn't quite as good as the others. a little too much time spent brooding. still, it ain't bad.
have to agree this is better than desolation. plus, there's murder w/a stone phallus. how can ya top that?
another fine book in the series. just love 'em, but for the life of me, and maybe i missed this, i don't recall a surgeon's mate ever making an appearance in the entire book. maybe it was the young lithuanian officer. anyhow, if you liked the ones the preceded this book, you'll like surgeon's mate, too.
like all charming tarts, she's the source of many problems. the narration is excellent, as always. if you liked the first 2 books, you'll like this one, as others have noted. and, i finally caved in and looked up a diagram of the sails, and other parts of a ship so i would know what the heck they were always yelling about during a battle.
for whatever reason, i could only get the first section at 48mb, so it sounded like someone was reading it to me over the phone, but the other sections were fine. anyhow, at first i thought, my god, are they ever going to sink anybody? but i wound up glad that we got a better look at all the characters involved. a fine book. can't wait to get to the next.
good book, if you like this sort of thing. good narration.
