Bryce is a fabulous writer and just draws the listener into the story and characters. He is a great novelist. This book went quickly and then he used a writer's trick at the end to hook the listener into getting the second installment in the trilogy. God, he is good! The narrator is fantastic and found his niche with Courtenay's material, what a dynamic duo. I highly recommend this book, existing fans will notice some familiar themes, but the story stands on its own. Bravo!
Action, adventure, fun
The last battle scene would be epic in a movie.
starting book 2 today.
Some reviewers suggested skipping because not a lot happens but the story is a good one and I enjoyed it.
Yes, if you love sci-fi or even science topics, this is a wonderful book.
Star Trek type story
No too long
Another great example of trusting the Audible subscriber ratings. I have never had a bad book that was rated more than 4 stars by the subscribers. This was another great example of a hidden gem.
Probably not, it's a great episode but having listened once I don;t think I would need to again.
Great characters and narration
His voice of Oberon is just brilliant. When he speaks for Oberon, I can see exactly what the big Irish hound looks like.
I was a litlte concerned I may not like it based on the publisher's summary, but trusted the high Audible ratings and was not disappointed!
To pick up on things I may have missed first time through
To get a better understand the book you really need to read the Odyssey along side. I was not willing to do that much work, so this course was the perfect solution. The professor does all the heavy lifting and points out the parallels for you. Thanks!
Great stories about real people and the decisions they made, that in, turn made them
The realness of the writing, these are real people.
It's a solid read if you like WWII history. It reminded me in parts of Unbroken, not as dramatic, but gut-wrenching real life people doing things during war time. Franz shows there is a human side, and that honor existed among the Third Reich.
The story itself and the narrator
When Lee's Army surrendered, I cheered! I was so sad by the part when Grant learns about the death of Lincoln. Recently saw the movie Lincoln, tied back to Grant's autobiography nicely.
Simply, "US Grant"
It's long, no doubt. It never got boring to me and it's amazing to listen to Grant writing in the first person about things that happened 150 years ago.
Yes, great survival lessons embedded in the story.
One second after. A reviewer of that book suggested this one instead. Thanks!
character voices and pronunciations.
If you read this book and were told it was written ion 2012/2013, you would not flinch. In fact it was written n the 1950's, yet it was not dated in its story. Great points about use of cash, material items and finally food as the ultimate currency. Likely true throughout time.
The honesty expressed about what really happens at GS and how the culture changed as the economy got worse was brutally clear.
When he sat down at his desk to collect his things and leave. It must have been a powerful moment for him and yet he never seemed to waiver in his conviction.
As the narrator he was able to use voice inflection and his personal tone to bring the story to life. I have known several South Africans but his accent on some words was really funny.
As a former management intern I appreciated the struggle to get a full-time position and also the cutthroat behavior of many Ivy League candidates.
It should be mandatory reading for CEOs and interns alike of those who wish to maintain a culture that is somewhat "old fashioned" in the way that it treats its customers. Here I mean "old fashioned" in a positive context. One where the client is not ever a muppet, lol!
this is too much work.
really, am I in 6th grade?
Didn't hear any national security secrets but the lawyer said do not shoot him if unarmed and he doesn't fight. He was unarmed and didn't fight but yet was killed. He deserved death for all he did but the author never addressed the discrepancy.
