  • Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Oprah's Book Club 2.0)

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Cheryl Strayed
    • Narrated By Bernadette Dunne
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

If you could sum up Wild in three words, what would they be?

    Patience, Endurance and Hope

What was one of the most memorable moments of Wild?

Because I had lived through a similar situation, experiencing the death of my mother at a young age and being her caregiver throughout a devastating bout with cancer. I recognized the many and confusing stages of the grieving process. It took me years to come to grips with and totaly understand and make sense of the many feelings of anger, sadness, rage, helplessness and lack of understanding one feels watching a loved one suffer.

I truley feel the book does a wonderful job of showing the similarities between the physical journey and the emotional journey one travels after loosing a loved one or experiencing and emotionally tramatic crisis. The story combined the physical endurance, hardships, and aloneness of hiking the trail with the often overwelming emptiness, aloneness, and helplessness one feels as they travel forward after an emotionally devestating event.

    Any additional comments?

She does a wonderful job of making the reader feel as though you are actually hiking the trail along with her.

  • This I Believe

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Jay Allison, Dan Gediman
    • Narrated By uncredited

Based on the NPR series of the same name, This I Believe features 80 Americans, from the famous to the unknown, completing the thought that begins with the audiobook's title. The pieces that make up the program will compel listeners to rethink not only what and how they have arrived at their own personal beliefs, but also the extent to which they share them with others.

I enjoyed the way this book was set up. The essays were each read by the author themselves.(whenever it was possible) It contains a broad variety of beliefs, from serious to humerous. This book exposes you to many different opinions and leaves you considering what belief you feel most strongly about.

  • Middlesex

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Jeffrey Eugenides
    • Narrated By Kristoffer Tabori

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

    "Story of a family/living/healing/and contentment"

I found the narration and the writing both to be amazingly interesting. I usually only listen to my audio books in the car while I am driving however I found myself not wanting to put this one down. It was recommended to me by a friend who had read the written copy. I also will highly recommend this book to others.
The story covered several generations and brought to life "issues" or "secrets" from the past. I think what I was most impressed with was the positive way in which the story was told and the contentment of the person at the end of the book. Simply happy being the person they were born to be.

  • Miracles on Maple Hill

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Virginia Sorensen
    • Narrated By Cynthia Bishop, the Full Cast Family
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A father's wounded heart. A mother's patient love. An eager boy, an impetuous girl, and, above all, the healing power of nature. These are the classic ingredients that fill Virginia Sorensen's Newbery Award-winning novel with a tender power and lift it to classic status.

I heard about this book while watching a maple syrup demonstration at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
I found this book to be a very sweet and uplifting story. The setting for the story is western Pennsylvania, and the story is about a family who experiences the miracles of nature when they spend time on maple hill. It is not only a wonderfully written story it also provides a lot of interesting information about the making of maple syrup. The cast in this audio performance do a wonderful job keeping the listeners interest throughout the entire story. I would highly recommend this audio book for children and adults as well.
