In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

Andy says: "entertaining but not as good as kitchen conf."
"Daring use of the "F" word-or not."

Would you try another book from Anthony Bourdain and/or Anthony Bourdain?

Nope. He is vulgar without being funny.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It was an interesting topic and I like cooking and insight into the industry, but he was crude to the point of being distracting.

At the opening of his third novel in an ongoing adventure series by Patrick O'Brian, Jack Aubrey is cruising off Cape Sicie when his friend Stephen Maturin (more serenely situated in Sussex) is informed of the Board's decision regarding Aubrey's prize money, taken after victorious engagement with a Spanish squadron at Cape Santa Maria. The money, five million pieces of eight, is not, as is the custom of war, to be divided among the crews of the four victorious vessels.

Bob says: "A pleasure to listen to"
    "Perhaps O'Brians best."

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Anyone who has not had a chance to listen to Patrick Tull's narration of what are, arguably, the best books ever written in this genre, should do so immediately.

What other book might you compare H.M.S. Surprise to and why?

They are better than Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, my second favorite series, but only just. O'Brians knowledge of the sea and his description of the various ship actions and other aspects of life in the British Navy are incomparable.

Which character – as performed by Patrick Tull – was your favorite?

Dr. Maturin stands out, but Tull does a great job with everyone.

If you could rename H.M.S. Surprise, what would you call it?

    Are you kidding? Why?

    Any additional comments?

I have listened to these books numerous times and continue to laugh at the interaction of characters, marvel at the degree of information about the sea and sailing they impart, and wish that Patrick O' Brian could have gone on writing forever.
