What did Charles Darwin, middling schoolboy and underachieving second son, do to become one of the earliest and greatest naturalists the world has known? What were the similar choices made by Mozart and by Caesar Rodriguez, the U.S. Air Force's last ace fighter pilot? In Mastery, Robert Greene's fifth book, he mines the biographies of great historical figures for clues about gaining control over our own lives and destinies. Picking up where The 48 Laws of Power left off, Greene culls years of research and original interviews to blend historical anecdote and psychological insight, distilling the universal ingredients of the world's masters.

I haven't listened to or read another author that tries to teach life lessons that are relevant today through historic stories from the past. Is he always successfull? No, not always. Is it entertaining and will you learn some cool stories about great masters of the past (think Mozart, Da Vinci)? Yes!

This book may or may not change your life. The lessons are great and the stories are interesting, however, as with all these self help types of books, you will only see change if you apply it. Fred Sanders does a great job narrating this book (one of the better Narrations I've listed to on a Robert Greene book).

One hundred years before Ender's Game, the aliens arrived on Earth with fire and death. Earth Afire by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston is the story of the First Formic War. Victor Delgado beat the alien ship to Earth, but just barely. Not soon enough to convince skeptical governments that there was a threat. They didn’t believe that until space stations and ships and colonies went up in sudden flame. And when that happened, only Mazer Rackham and the Mobile Operations Police could move fast enough to meet the threat.

I'll save you some time. ALL that happens in this book is the formics land on earth. Other than that it's a bunch of forgetable nonsense and little resolutions. I remember when Card used to develop amazing characters and then put them in philisophically interesting situations. None of that here. Just flat characters that do predictable things. Mazer Rackham and Bingwen are sort of interesting and "save" this book from being completely dull. I think Card is writing for the big screen as this seems like it could be a better movie than a book.

This is my first Neil Gaiman book and definitely not my last. The dialogue is satisfyingly entertaining. I haven't listened to dialogue this witty and good in quite a while. In my opinion that plot wasn't all that spectacular, but that doesn't matter as what this book is truly about is Shadow and his interactions with the old and new world and here it doesn't disappoint. The production of the Narration is great. A truly wonderful and entertaining experience. WOW.

Earl Harbinger may be the leader of Monster Hunter International, but he's also got a secret. Nearly a century ago, Earl was cursed to be a werewolf. When Earl receives word that one of his oldest foes, a legendarily vicious werewolf that worked for the KGB, has mysteriously appeared in the remote woods of Michigan, he decides to take care of some unfinished business.

If you like the Monster Hunter series up to this point you will like this. It's not like the other two entries in that you follow Pitt around, but once you get over this (I'll admit I was a little disappointed at first) the story is fantastic. Lots of blood, gore, undead and werewolves...lots and lost of werewolves. Harbinger has been a good character so far, but his addition puts him over the top. I enjoyed his backstory and struggle dealing with being a werewolf. As always, the Narration is great.

Most people think 15-year-old Charlie is a freak. But then seniors Patrick and his beautiful stepsister Sam take Charlie under their wings and introduce him to their eclectic, open-minded, hard-partying friends. It is from these older kids that Charlie learns to live and love.

It's hard not to like or relate to Charlie. He is a smart freshman that is, like most of us were, thrown into the overwhelming world of high school. Drugs, Sex, and Music. As with most smart kids he spends too much time in his head and not enough time living. Watching Charlie grown through this book is a treat. The only problem I have with this book is the ending, just not sure I liked it (It wasn't predictable like many of these types of books are, but it also was kind of just....eh). That aside, the narration is one of the best I've heard on audible. The narrator brings this book to life and helps you identify and feel for Charlie. It's worth a listen.

Accountant turned professional monster hunter, Owen Zastava Pitt, managed to stop the nefarious Old Ones' invasion plans last year, but as a result made an enemy out of one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Now an evil death cult known as the Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition wants to capture Owen in order to gain the favor of the great Old Ones.

If you liked the first of this series then all you need to know is this one is better. The story is more action packed, the zombies are still zombies and Owen is still a badass meathead. There are dark forces at work and you can tell this is just the tip of the iceberg. The narration is as good as the first of the series. Can't wait to start the next to see what the old ones are going to try to throw at Owen next.

Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

I will admit, this audio book has me looking at the world (male and female interactions) a bit differently. It offers up a perspective that isn't really taught in school and backs it up with comparisons to our ancestors and monkeys. This isn't all that much of a stretch as this is how a lot of this type of science works, but it comes with a huge caveat that anybody who has spent any time with stats will tell you. Correlation does not mean causation.

That aside it's a fascination perspective, makes a lot of sense and will probably change the way you view relationships (hopefully in a positive way). The narration is a bit dry and that does hurt the overall enjoyment of this work.

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer. It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

This audio book is great. The story is good (not amazing but definitely entertaining) and the narration is superb. It's the equivalent of a good, big budget action film. It won't change your perspective on life or give you amazing insights, but it will keep you entertained (that's if you can suspend your disbelief enough to think that Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies all "live" in this world and there are secret hunting organizations keeping things under wraps...i've swallowed stranger premises before). If that sounds a bit silly then maybe you should pass, but if you're OK with that strap yourself in for a great ride....and I'm off to book 2.

The mining ship El Cavador is far out from Earth, in the deeps of the Kuiper Belt, beyond Pluto. Other mining ships, and the families that live on them, are few and far between this far out. So when El Cavador’s telescopes pick up a fast-moving object coming in-system, it’s hard to know what to make of it. It’s massive and moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light.

El Cavador has other problems. Their systems are old and failing. The family is getting too big for the ship. There are claim-jumping corporate ships bringing Asteroid Belt tactics to the Kuiper Belt.

This is probably my least favorite Card novel I've read or listened to. Yeah yeah, Card is amazing at building characters you either like or hate. The philisophical dilemas people face when confronted with the first sightings of the Formics is interesting and Card's take on the event is fantastic.....but then the book just ends.

There will obviously be a follow up to this as the book leaves about 1,000 unanswered questions. Kind of frustrating as this book serves as nothing but a tease to a fascinating situation....If you're thinking about making this your first dive into the Ender Universe do youself a favor and hold off on this. Start with Enders Game.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

It's a solid effort and worth listening to. Ray Porter is phenomenal.
