Mary Ingles was 23, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months they held her captive. But nothing could imprison her spirit. With the rushing Ohio River as her guide, Mary Ingles walked one thousand miles through an untamed wilderness no white woman had ever seen.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book is amazing because it is a true story, but it was a bit drawn out and boring at times. I found myself wishing the author would get on with it. It was alright. I didn't love it, but I had to finish listening to see how it ended. The human spirit is amazing. The narrator was excellent.

    Any additional comments?

I listened to this book for book club and was pleasantly surprised. The writing is just beautiful. Oliver is very talented and I look forward to downloading another of her books. The narrator does an excellent job and I am glad that I listened to this book rather than reading it. While I didn't have a high school experience anything like this, I could relate to several of the social problems that exist in the teenage world. I thought I had this book all figured out within the first hour, but I am glad to say I was wrong. I loved the way the author weaves the story with new bits of information and insight as she goes along. I love the humanness of the characters- while I wanted to hate the mean girls and pity the picked on ones, Oliver helps you to have understanding and empathy for why people act the way they do. It was heartbreaking and lovely all at the same time and it made my yard work go by much faster. It is definitely not just a YA book- everyone can remember high school and relate.

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil.

What did you love best about The Poisonwood Bible?

This was a very good story. I loved learning about life in Africa. I both loved and hated the characters at the same time. I felt bad for the mother being stuck in a horrible situation but not having a way to fix it. I kept waiting for her to grow a backbone and stand up to her husband. I liked learning about the sad history of the African politics.

In the fall of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths.

What made the experience of listening to The Best of Me the most enjoyable?

I'm a big Nicholas Sparks fan and this one hits the bullseye again. It is a good story with a good combination of romance and action. The ending is both sad and good. I like how he dealt with the marriage/adultery issues.

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers.

Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

Together again in the house they grew up in, the Waverley sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy - if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom - or with each other.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved this story. I thought the story line flowed well and I loved the interpersonal relationships between the characters. I wished all the herbal stuff really worked! Definitely worth the credit.

A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

What disappointed you about A Tree Grows in Brooklyn?

I liked reading about how the way life was in Brooklyn during this time period, but the story itself is boring. I probably would have quit listening to it halfway through, but my book club was reading it, so I finished it. The narrator was very good and helped out the story as best she could with her fantastic accents.

Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

What disappointed you about Prodigal Summer?

The ending was horrible!! It just ended suddenly. I double checked to see if I missed downloading the end of the book because I couldn't believe she really ended it with so many loose ends just sitting there unfinished. But no, I did download the whole book and was mad that I was wasted my money. I loved Poisonwood Bible, but this one is not nearly as good. I am not anti-environmental, but this book is a bit too tree-huggerish for me. If you want a lesson on organic farming, moth mating, and the predator/prey relationship in the wild, than this is the book for you.

What could Barbara Kingsolver have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Finished the story

What aspect of Barbara Kingsolver’s performance would you have changed?

Some people said they didn't like her voice, but I thought it was fine. I didn't mind listening to it.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I liked the interpersonal relationships between the characters but, then again, they were left hanging.

Where does Broken for You rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved this book. It is a very touching book about the very best in human beings who are there for each other and change each others lives for the better. I enjoyed all the different characters who were described so well I felt as if they really exist somewhere in the world.
I am usually pretty good about guessing what is going to happen, but this book had a few twists that I didn't see coming, which is nice. Narrator is great! Nice to listen to. A bit of bad language and one or two brief and not too detailed sex scenes.

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

I loved this book. It is a great story about a strong little girl who deals with a lot and the women who rally around her to help her out. I loved the characters. They were easy to fall in love with and you found yourself rooting for the young CeeCee throughout the book. I love the resiliency of the human spirit portrayed in this story and how important it is to reach out to those around us who need a shoulder to lean on. I loved Jenna Lamia's voice as the narrator in "The Help" and was happy to hear it again in this book. She does a great job.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
    "Exceeded my expectation"
    Overall

I loved this book. It's not usually the kind of book I pick, but I was pleasantly surprised. The story is amazing. I found myself constantly marveling at the fortitude of Louie and the other POW prisoners and disgusted at the cruelty of the Japanese captors. It really pointed out how war brings out the best and worst in people. Really, I loved it because it is a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. I couldn't stop listening. My kids became sick of seeing me clean the house with earphones in my ears. The narrator has a pleasant voice that is easy to listen to.
