"Not what I expected"
I was expecting something quite different but regardless it was engrossing and enjoyable. Narration is outstanding and you won't be disppointed. I look forward to the HBO series.
"An old friend"
Have always loved this story and the audible production was like visiting an old friend. It's so very romantic and Jean Paget is a strong female character. Beautifully read and I particularly enjoyed the turns of phrase that have disappeared over time....my word I did.
"Good editor needed"
Phew....talk about the minutiae of life - there's that and so much more of that. I listened to the end and was rewarded with some stellar phrases and images. The characters plodded through this book but the narrator soared.
"A whole lotta horse"
It's a wonderful novel full of flawed character of human, equine and canine persuasion. It is very long however and without an expectation of a fulfilling ending you won't be disappointed. It just kind of fizzles out like a worn out candle. But no doubt about it, Smiley can write.
"Stephen Fry carries you away"
This is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. No wonder the book has topped the best seller lists here in Australia. I think that Stephen Fry could read a shopping list and still have my undivided attention. I listened in 40 minute chunks and I think that digesting in larger portions could lessen the enjoyment.
"Still holds up well"
Loved the book, loved the mini-series and this audio book is better than either. This sweeping tale and the characters living within are very engaging and without much effort you are soon living in Delano.
"Trivia unlimited"
Bill Bryson has written another engrossing 'chat' full of so many trivial, yet fascinating facts, that I was drawn back to it until the finish. Could listen to it again. Bryson is the king of droll.
