Great mystery and suspense writers have created some of the most unforgettable stories in all of literature. Even those who don't consider themselves fans of this intriguing genre are familiar with names such as Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade, Hannibal Lecter, and Robert Langdon, and understand the deep and lasting impact this writing has had on literature as a whole.

In the first lecture, the “professor” goes on a rant about how it’s unrealistic to think that minds solve problems better than fists and guns, and that hard-boiled crime fiction is superior to the likes of Christie or Doyle. That attitude is ridiculous, anti-intellectual, and sad. It’s sort of pathetic that in modern times, even colleges are so ashamed of the idea that thinking is a valid thing to do that they host thoughts like that in a class. It’s not “realistic”, it’s just wrong.
