It is 1866 and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes. A wealthy man has vanished, a whore has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky.

What disappointed you about The Luminaries?

The narrator's vocal intonations become very annoying. The story moves very slowly. Perhaps an abridged version would be better?

What could Eleanor Catton have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story is interesting and may be a better read than a listen.

Would you be willing to try another one of Mark Meadows’s performances?

No. His voice and individual character accents are great but when he switches to narrating the story in his own voice, it becomes very irritating.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointing. Does every sentence have to be spoken like a question?

A body has been found on the overlook near Mulholland Drive. The victim, identified as Dr. Stanley Kent, has two bullet holes in the back of his head, from what looks like an execution-style shooting. LAPD detective Harry Bosch is called out to investigate. As soon as Bosch begins retracing Dr. Kent's steps, contradictions emerge. While Kent doesn't seem to have had ties to organized crime, he did have access to dangerous radioactive substances from just about every hospital in Los Angeles County.

Good story line but couldn't stand the narrator. Didn't finish this one. May not be too bad if you want a bedtime sleep aid.
