More than 50 years after its first publication, Doubleday's definitive edition of Anne Frank's famous diary generated an extraordinary amount of excitement when it was published in early 1995. Enthusiastically received by critics and readers alike, it reigned for nine weeks on The New York Times best seller list and will remain for all time the version that millions of readers will cherish.

Selma Blair did a great job of narrating this heart-wrenching story. A must-read/listen. The story shows a unique perspective of the terrors of the time, the type of problems we can hardly imagine today. Anne's fate is such a shame, she really had a great gift.

When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

In a "Big Brother" type of scenario, this book makes me fearful that we're headed in this direction. I think that means it's effective. :)

This is the story of the unhappy family of Anna Karenina. The novel contains much concerning Tolstoy's spiritual crisis and his search for the meaning of life. But it is also chiefly about marriage, and the growth and death of love.

    Story

The only reason I gave this 3 stars is because the reader was quite good. I have no idea why this book is a classic. The story just sort of peters out at the end, like Tolstoy got tired of writing and gave up. I'm so disappointed that I invested so much time in a story that I ended up not caring about in the least.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

The choice to have 2 narrators for this book was fantastic and added a realism you couldn't get otherwise! I loved the story, loved the narrators. Easy and fun to listen to.

Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert.

    Story

I read the first half of this book and just couldn't find the time to finish reading it. I got the audio book, wanting to finish the story, but I couldn't get beyond 4 hours. I love the melody of this book and Hugo's command over words and sentence structure (strange since it is a translation). Unfortunately, the reader never grasped the beauty of the words he was reading. His voice is largely monotone and uninteresting; he sounds disdainful and as if the story was causing a bad smell under his nose. Perhaps it's like Shakespeare -- difficult to read but amazing if performed by someone who both understands and loves it. It's very sad, and I hate to say it, but I don't think this reader does either. Disappointing.
