I loved this story! I've read the first 10 books in the Reacher series and this is in my top 3. A few nice twists, and some surprises got me hooked within the first 20 minutes.
Dick Hill was great in the narration of this one (even though I got used to his voice reading some Bosch stories which was a hard image to shake), and the story develops well and keeps the tension building. Maybe there's a bit too much detail when Reacher takes down one of the enemies, which is not for the faint hearted but a well-written book that I'd highly recommend!
Good work, Lee and well read, Dick!
For me, this started off Ok, started to get my interest then dragged on to the point of boredom. I guessed the end and the unsub's identity a fair few hours from the end and also the killing method. The character used as a 'curve ball' to send you in one direction was pointless and frustrating and just added to my dislike of this story. This is my least favourite of the first 10 Reacher books that I have read/heard and am not sure if I would recommend it.
I quite like Jonathan McClain in some of the series but here there are some annoying voices which added to my dislike of this book. Also, after Reacher had collaborated with the FBI in the 2nd in the series, shouldn't that have been mentioned here too?
Sorry, but this one just wasn't for me.
Although this is the 2nd in the Jack Reacher series it was the first I 'read' and got me totally hooked!
I stumbled across Lee Child's work after having finished Crais's Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels and Connelly's Bosch books and was not at all disappointed.
Child has a very good writing style, maybe even a step above Crais and definitely on a par with Connelly, and the story is developed well with a great plot and character descriptions. The tension mounts in every chapter and although it's a long one, you'll find yourself getting through it in no time.
Many reviewers have (unfairly) criticised Jonathan's reading style by comparing him to Dick Hill who reads some of the later books in the series, but I enjoyed the younger voice for Reacher, and, having heard some of the other Reacher books after with Hill narrating, I still can't get the image of Harry Bosch out of my head as I first heard him there.
All considered, this is a great, well-read book which got me addicted to Child's work. Well done, Lee. You've just got another fellow Brit fan!
