  • The Last Olympian: Percy Jackson, Book 5: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 5

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Rick Riordan
    • Narrated By Jesse Bernstein
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

All year the half-bloods have been preparing for battle against the Titans, knowing the odds of victory are grim. Kronos's army is stronger than ever, and with every god and half-blood he recruits, the evil Titan's power only grows. While the Olympians struggle to contain the rampaging monster Typhon, Kronos begins his advance on New York City, where Mount Olympus stands virtually unguarded. Now it's up to Percy Jackson and an army of young demigods to stop the Lord of Time.

Anandasubramanian says: "Jesse Berstein IS Percy Jackson"
    "Horrible Narration"

I love listening to these kids of stories in the car...easy to for the kids. But the narrator is really bad. His voice is nasally and when he does the characters voices they are stilted. The narration is very distracting from the story so that even a 12 year old who loves the books - doesn't want to listen. Don't waste your credits.

  • Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Eduardo Galeano, Isabel Allende (Foreward)
    • Narrated By Jonathan Davis
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation.

    Gina Papa says: "Excellent"

Well narrated and a very worthwhile book for anyone interested in South American culture and why the "illegal immigration issues" is just a smokescreen to hide a deeper issue, which is the politics of the U.S. and South American countries.

  • Dead Lie Down

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Sophie Hannah
    • Narrated By Elizabeth Sastre

Ruth Bussey once did something wrong-horribly wrong-and was nearly destroyed by her punishment. Now, she has tentatively rebuilt her life and unexpectedly found love with a man named Aidan Seed. But Aidan also has a secret-he killed someone years ago, a woman named Mary Trelease. Ruth's horror turns to confusion when she realizes that she knows Mary Trelease, and Mary is very much alive.

John says: "The Dead Lie Down"
    "Do not bother!"

Oh my god! I have had a string of poor stories and narration here. This story is so difficult to follow, and the pacing is very slow. Although the end picked up a little, most of the characters were uninteresting and boring. I'm not sure if the author liked any of them.

  • Fever Dream

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Lincoln Child, Douglas Preston
    • Narrated By Rene Auberjonois
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

At the old family manse in Louisiana, Special Agent Pendergast is putting to rest long-ignored possessions reminiscent of his wife Helen's tragic death, only to make a stunning - and dreadful - discovery. Helen had been mauled by an unusually large and vicious lion while they were big game hunting in Africa. But now, Pendergast learns that her rifle-her only protection from the beast-had been deliberately loaded with blanks. Who could have wanted Helen dead...and why?

    Snoodely says: "Intelligent, spooky thriller"

While this may be a good book, I find it laborious. The narration is affected - and the story is difficult to follow - but maybe because I lost interest and my mind wandered quite a bit.

  • U Is for Undertow: A Kinsey Millhone Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Sue Grafton
    • Narrated By Judy Kaye
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It's April, 1988, a month before Kinsey Millhone's 38th birthday, and she's alone in her office doing paperwork when a young man arrives unannounced. He has a preppy air about him and looks as if he'd be carded if he tried to buy booze, but Michael Sutton is 27, an unemployed college dropout. Twenty-one years earlier, a four-year-old girl disappeared, and a recent reference to her kidnapping has triggered a flood of memories.

BSquared67 says: "A brilliant departure from the familiar"
    "Always consistently Good"

Once again the author and the reader do not disappoint. If you like these mysteries, they are a great listen, easy to follow when you are driving, and not so intense you plow into a truck.

  • Paid in Blood

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Mel Odom
    • Narrated By Kevin King

Listeners with an interest in crime scene investigation will be gripped as a crack team of Naval Criminal Investigative Service special agents investigates crime scenes around the world.

Amazon Customer says: "Good Military Book"
    "Whoa! What happened here?"

Whoa what went wrong here. The book doesn't flow, characters were stale and one dimensional. I was offended by the Latina cleaning woman, who, of course, had a nephew in trouble, and a husband in jail who gets an NCIS agent killed trying to help her.

Of course injury added to insult when the Latina agent has a horrible stereotypical accent. Note to reader...When you are doing a woman's voice just read it...don't try to sound the way you think we do!

If that's not bad enough, we get a mini allegory thrown in about belief in God and Jesus etc. I started to feel like I was in church. The author is welcome to make his characters have a point of view and a religion. However, maybe if there was some character development it might have fit in with the story. Instead we are subjected to preaching about the value of having faith in God. I myself was praying that the story would eventually find a rhythym and be entertaining. My faith has been tested.

  • Dragon Bones

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 40 mins)
    • By Lisa See
    • Narrated By Liza Ross

When the body of an American archaeologist is found floating in the Yangtze River, Ministry of Public Security agent Liu Hulan and American attorney David Stark are sent to investigate. As Hulan scrutinizes this death, David tries to discover who has stolen an artifact from the site.

Lehua says: "This one has it all"
    "More Mystery! Less History!"

I was bored and found my mind wandering. The book was supposed to be a mystery focusing on a chinese detective. Instead is was a history and a discussion of chinese art (never described so I still don't know what it is). I suppose I was expecting more character development, like in Amy Tan. While we get a narrative of the past and present experiences of the characters, they seem bland and one dimensional to me. Also, as far as Narration is concerned I like a straight read. Unless you are the narrator for Harry Potter, please just read the book, we all have enough imagination, and inflection and tone is enough to suffice!

    Michael says: "excellent"

Most of the audio is spent in "sucess stories" and name dropping. Narration is poor, not an enjoyable voice to listen to. Nothing said that hasn't been said before, somewhere else or better. Not very deep.

  • Next

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Michael Crichton
    • Narrated By Dylan Baker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Devilishly clever, Next blends fact and fiction into a breathless tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems, and a set of new possibilities can open at every turn. Next challenges our sense of reality and notions of morality. Balancing the comic and bizarre with the genuinely frightening and disturbing, Next shatters our assumptions and reveals shocking new choices where we least expect.

Ronald says: "interesting topic - dull, boring, confusing book"

Michael Chricton is usually enjoyable listening, escpecially for driving, as it's exciting, and doesn't require a whole of attention or investment. This book however, tended to meander through the story, and the characters are not especially intriguing or interesting. The whole genetic issue is just sensationalized. Maybe it's a better read than a listen?
