I loved this story of one young woman's fight to challenge convention make a difference in a world consumed with war. It is funny, romantic and tragic without being syrupy or maudlin. I didn't want it to end.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The Martian was a challenging listen due to the mass amounts of science, physics, technology, etc. that the author felt he had to explain. Had I been reading the book, I would have skimmed/skipped large chunks of it. I finished it because I had much empathy for the main character who was literally MacGyver on steroids. There was enough "technical" information to make the story plausible as well.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I was worried about the ending for a long time. I was pleased that it ended the way it did.

Have you listened to any of R. C. Bray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Not that I know of.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes! It would be a very good movie - the script would need to highlight Mark's humor and drollness. Sort of like the Castaway except on Mars and everyone knows where he is - a very cool premise.

    Any additional comments?

Not sure who I would recommend this book to. There is a lot to wade through but the characters are strong and likeable.

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Would you try another book from J. K. Rowling and/or Tom Hollander?

This book sounded as though it would mix humor with small town lives and small town minds. It turned out to be dark and humorless with sad children and pathetic grown-ups. Now that I think about it, not that different from Harry Potter in that instead of being a cast of fearful characters fighting a villain, it is a cast of miserable characters who are villains in their own right.

    >The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and an icon for her generation, a 15-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book because it provides a unique view of history and world events from the eyes of a New York City orphan / Kansas farm girl.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Chaperone?

As Cora ages, she becomes worldwise and her compassion continues to grow, It was incredibly touching at Allen's funeral, when she embraces Raymond.

Which character – as performed by Elizabeth McGovern – was your favorite?

    Cora

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Would you try another book from Gillian Flynn and/or Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ?

    No.

What was most disappointing about Gillian Flynn’s story?

The main characters in this book generate zero empathy and after 6 hours of listening, I really don't care in the slightest what happened to the girl or the husband. Every chapter is more of the same trying to lead you to jump to a conclusion and at the end of the day, I just don't care enough to even jump. Tiresome is being generous.

I ALWAYS finish the books I download and have been an audible member for years. I will not finish this one. It is just too tedious and neither character is anyone you would to know more about much less care about.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The best book club you’ve never heard of – but will be eager to join, courtesy of a full cast of true characters. January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb....

I have read many WWII books, but not many "after the war" books. I had never heard of the Guernsey Islands but now feel compelled to go. This is a precious story with multiple narrators who bring it to life. It bring into focus how people coped during the war and provides insight into the resolve of a community.

Keller possesses all the qualities of a professional killer. He's cool, confident, reclusive, icy, and ruthlessly efficient. But this seasoned hit man is also prone to self-doubt as he finds himself caught in the clutches of a mid-life crisis.

I ordered this book because I needed a relatively short listen and it was on sale. What a bargain I got. This is a very strange book that makes you think about ethics, morals, right and wrong in a little bit different light. The narrator is perfect for this book.

The quiet 1960s midwestern life of the Land family is upended when son Davy kills two marauders who have come to harm the family. The morning of his sentencing, Davy (a hero to some, a cold-blooded murderer to others) escapes from his cell, and the Lands set out in search of him. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and they cover territory even more extraordinary than the Badlands, where they search for Davy from their Airstream trailer.

Sofie's a young Greek-American woman living in Queens. If you'd asked her a few months ago what she'd be doing now, she'd have replied, "I'm going to be married to a wonderful guy and working at my father's, or maybe my grandfather's, Greek restaurant."

I couldn't finish this book because it is such a complete knock-off of the Stephanie Plum books AND because it is also a complete knock-off of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. There is nothing original about this book and it was a huge disappointment. I really liked the narrator, Anna Fields, in Match Me If You Can but not even Anna can bail out this bad writing.
