I like edgy, offbeat books. All of my audiobooks are mysteries because I listen in the car. I prefer to read more literary works.

  • NOS4A2: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Joe Hill
    • Narrated By Kate Mulgrew
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

Christopher Barnes says: "D*mn near flawless"
    "Exciting. thrilling, suspenseful!!"
If you could sum up NOS4A2 in three words, what would they be?

I put the three words in my headline

What other book might you compare NOS4A2 to and why?

Having just listened to Dr Sleep, I see a connection. There is even mention of the True Knot in this book. There is a need for suspension of disbelief, and once you accept that you can roll with the action and feel part of it.

What about Kate Mulgrew’s performance did you like?

Her voice was appropriate for both male and female voices. She exaggerated the voices of Bing and Charlie, but they came across as appropriately creepy.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

We'll take you to a place where it's Christmas every day…….and you can stay forever

    Any additional comments?

I am happy that Joe Hill has the skill to continue his father's amazing work and to give it his own personality. I look forward to reading much more of his work.

  • Gone Girl: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Gillian Flynn
    • Narrated By Julia Whelan, Kirby Heyborne
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Teddy says: "Demented, twisted, sick and I loved it!"
What disappointed you about Gone Girl?

The people were hollow, not worth knowing. I truly did not care what happened to them and was very bored at the beginning, but since the book has been on the best seller list for so long I thought it must be good. I kept thinking it would get better, and it did in terms of the reader wanting to find out what happened, but when I got to the end I was completely tired of these people and felt very unsatisfied.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I will go back to the mystery/thriller genre. Somehow I thought this would be a mystery. I had just completed Creole Belle and loved it so much that I probably expected too much from this book.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I can't say I had a favorite at all. I did enjoy the part in which the female main character is on the road and finding a place to stay.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Gone Girl?

I guess I would not cut any scenes because the book seems to have so many admirers as it is.

    Any additional comments?

I definitely like the dark side of books and films. Noir is a favorite of mine, so the darkness of this book does not bother me. Simply put, the characters lack empathy and seem to have no redeeming qualities.

  • Creole Belle: A Dave Robicheaux Novel, Book 19

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By James Lee Burke
    • Narrated By Will Patton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Creole Belle begins where the last book in the Dave Robicheaux series, The Glass Rainbow, ended. Dave is in a recovery unit in New Orleans, where a Creole girl named Tee Jolie Melton visits him and leaves him an iPod with the country blues song “Creole Belle” on it. Then she disappears. Dave becomes obsessed with the song and the memory of Tee Jolie and goes in search of her sister, who later turns up inside a block of ice floating in the Gulf.

Melinda says: "Burke & Patton -- Synergistic Phenomenon"
    "Still amazing!"
What did you love best about Creole Belle?

Unbelievably, this writer keeps getting better. I look forward to July when his new book comes out and I wonder how it can be better than the last, but he never disappoints. His use of actual occurrences makes it more realistic as with the hurricane in Tin Roof and the oil spill in this one. I loved the inclusion of the Dupres family and the evil entwined among all of them. Bringing a Nazi into the picture was especially interesting for me. And I very much enjoy Dave's ruminations on life and mortality.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gretchen was the character who was new and fresh in this book. She embodies Dave's concept of redemption which runs through all of the books. She is a hardened survivor of the worst that life can heap on someone, but her interests and desire to change are stronger than the sins of the past. I hope she appears again in a future book.

What does Will Patton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I cannot imagine listening to a Dave Robicheaux book with anyone other than Will Patton narrating. The nuances and inflections of his voice make me feel like Dave is truly telling me his story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

As the book reached the climax I was on edge. How would they all get out of the mess they found themselves in? I had to take the Ipod out of the car and carry it around so I could satisfy my curiosity and get the full effect of the conclusion. And now I'm disappointed that it is finished and I will have to wait another year.

  • The Enemy

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Lee Child
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

New Year's Day, 1990. The Berlin Wall is coming down. The world is changing. And in a North Carolina "hot-sheets" motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Jack Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. But this situation can't be controlled.

Corinne says: "Made me really admire Reacher"
    "My first Reacher novel"

This was the first Reacher book I had listened to and I was expecting an exciting, fast-paced story. Instead the story lagged and it was difficult to continue. It took a complicated turn and in the end was largely unsatisfying. I am giving him another try now and listening to Worth Dying For which also begins a little slowly. I really want to like this writer and his bold main character.

  • Bones to Ashes

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Kathy Reichs
    • Narrated By Linda Emond
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When the skeleton of a young girl, not yet a teenager, is discovered in Acadia, Canada, Tempe Brennan is reminded of Evangelina, her best friend in her preteen years, who was mysteriously taken away when she was 12. Evangelina was from strange and faraway Acadia. She was named after Evangeline in the Longfellow poem, and loved poetry. Tempe found her exotic and glamorous, and then suddenly she was gone, and Tempe was told not to try to find her, that she was "dangerous".

    Lannielui says: "Average All Around"

I have enjoyed Kathy Reichs' books in the past, but this was way too technical, very boring, and it never seemed to produce the expected and desired excitement. There were too many loose ends and when the mystery was solved I didn't care anymore.

  • The Tin Roof Blowdown: A Dave Robicheaux Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By James Lee Burke
    • Narrated By Will Patton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, and bodies float through the streets and hang from trees.

Deborah says: "How Does One Manage?"
    "A great book, as usual"

I downloaded this as soon as it came out and it is great like all of his Dave Robicheaux books. Will Hutton is a superb reader and really captures the Southern voice with all of the subtleties of Dave's character -- and Clete Purcell is always entertaining.
I have never been disappointed by a Burke book and this is no exception.
