Two sisters. Two voices. One Heart.

The mystery of "Magic Man." The wicked riff of "Barracuda." The sadness and beauty of "Alone." The raw energy of "Crazy On You." These songs, and so many more, are part of the fabric of American music. Heart, fronted by Ann and Nancy Wilson, has given fans everywhere classic, raw, and pure badass rock and roll for more than three decades. As the only sisters in rock who write their own music and play their own instruments, Ann and Nancy have always stood apart - certainly from their male counterparts but also from their female peers.

What did you love best about Kicking and Dreaming?

An interesting story. Anyone who listened to Heart's music growing up will enjoy this book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kicking and Dreaming?

How Ann Wilson was able to overcome her self image issues with her weight. The hurtful comments that were thrown at her would have devistated almost anyone else.

Which character – as performed by Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson – was your favorite?

    Both ere equally enjoyable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, just because of its length. However, I would still listen to sections of it for hours.

    Any additional comments?

Glad the authors read this book.

As lead vocalist for the iconic rock band Queen, Freddie Mercury's unmatched skills as a songwriter and his flamboyant showmanship made him a superstar and Queen a household name. But despite his worldwide fame, few people ever really glimpsed the man behind the glittering facade. Now, more than 20 years after his death, those closest to Mercury are finally opening up about this pivotal figure in rock 'n' roll. Based on more than a hundred interviews with key figures in his life, Mercury offers the definitive account of one man's legendary life in the spotlight and behind the scenes.

    What disappointed you about Mercury?

The premise of this book was how Freddie and Queen stole the show at the 1985 Live Aid show.

For anyone who watched it live, Queen was good but not the most memorable act. Yet, the author kept coming back to that.

What could Lesley-Ann Jones have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not much. It is difficult to write a book about someone who has been dead for quite some time.

    Any additional comments?

I only made it about one-third of the way through this book. I kept hoping it would improve but it never did.

In Dream Team, acclaimed sports journalist Jack McCallum delivers the untold story of the greatest team ever assembled: the 1992 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team that captivated the world, kindled the hoop dreams of countless children around the planet, and remade the NBA into a global sensation. As a senior staff writer for Sports Illustrated, McCallum enjoyed a courtside seat for the most exciting basketball spectacle on earth, covering the Dream Team from its inception to the gold medal ceremony in Barcelona.

Where does Dream Team rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Average.

What did you like best about this story?

This book provided much insight into what made this dream team and its members so special. It will be tough for there ever to be another all star team like this one.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

None in particular, but this book was still very entertaining. I'm glad I read it.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I have quite a few audio books that I am reading.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator did a good job but the story / her story was just not as interesting as I would have hoped.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It was interesting to hear about Beatlemania from the inside.

Alana Stewart and Farrah Fawcett went through it all together. Friends for 30 years, they were an essential part of each other's lives since first meeting at a dinner party in the 1970s. During that time, they supported each other through the trials of Hollywood life while also raising their families, keeping in close contact. But in the fall of 2006, a test of their friendship arose unlike any other they'd faced: Farrah was diagnosed with aggressive rectal cancer.

What made the experience of listening to My Journey with Farrah the most enjoyable?

The author's friendship with Farrah was simply amazing. Also, cancer is a disease that has touched nearly everyone. It was very interesting to hear how Alana and Farrah dealt with this during those last three years.

What other book might you compare My Journey with Farrah to and why?

    None.

What about Deanna Hurst’s performance did you like?

The narration and focal tones were also fantastic.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Farrah's sense of humor regarding a Jaguar lease.

    Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book. It is impossible to listen to this and not be touched by it.

  • Neil Young's Harvest (33 1/3 Series)

Neil Young's Harvest is one of those strange albums that has achieved lasting success without ever winning the full approval of rock critics or hardcore fans. Even Young himself has been equivocal, describing it in one breath and his "finest" album, dismissing in the next as an NOR aberration. Here, Sam Inglis explores the circumstances of the album's creation and asks who got it right: The critics, or the millions who have bought Harvest in the 30 years since its release?

Would you try another book from Sam Inglis and/or Jay Snyder?

I would recommend that you spend the 3 hours listening to this album 4 to 6 times rather than reading this book.

What could Sam Inglis have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Nothing. He did a great job with the material that he had. However, I just did not enjoy it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    No.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment that I wasted 3 hours of my time listening to it.

    Any additional comments?

This was my first 33.3 album audio books that I purchased. This will probably be my last.

  • Rod: The Autobiography

Rod Stewart was born the working class son of a Scottish plumber in north London. Despite some early close shaves with a number of diverse career paths ranging from gravedigging to professional soccer, it was music that truly captured his heart - and he never looked back. Rod’s is an incredible life, and here - thrillingly and for the first time - he tells the entire thing, leaving no knickers under the bed. A rollicking rock ’n’ roll adventure that is at times deeply moving, this is the remarkable journey of a guy with one hell of a voice - and one hell of a head of hair.

Ninotchka says: "If you think he's sexy - or not - give it a go!"

What did you like best about Rod? What did you like least?

I enjoyed hearing about how Rod was able to date some of the most beautiful models in the world.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Rod seemed a bit too into himself how he often referred to himself as "the hero of the story".

What aspect of Simon Vance’s performance would you have changed?

This would have been more enjoyable if Rod had read his book. That was what I enjoyed most about Pete Townsend's book.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Only recommended for die hard Rod Stewart fans. Any casual fans may not enjoy it.

Delta Force—the US Army’s most elite top-secret strike force. They dominate the modern battlefield, but you won’t hear about their heroics on CNN. No headlines can reveal their top-secret missions, and no book has ever taken readers inside—until now. Here, a founding member of Delta Force takes us behind the veil of secrecy and into the action to reveal the never-before-told story of First Special Forces Operational Detachment-D (Delta Force).

Would you listen to Inside Delta Force again? Why?

I prefer not to listen to audio books more than once. However, I would recommend this book to others.

What did you like best about this story?

The inside story about the house where they train to rescue hostages is fascinating. I still find it hard to believe this stuff went on with real bullets.

Also, it was very interesting hearing the inside story of the failed Iran Hostage rescue attempt from one of the leaders of the rescue attempt.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The first time they went through the hostage rescue house when they had no idea what to expect, was riveting.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

How to adjust your bearings when you are lost in the woods.

    Any additional comments?

Worth reading for anyone who enjoys military history.

What made the experience of listening to Who I Am the most enjoyable?

Listening to Pete read it. He has a pleasant voice and lightens it up by chuckling every now and then.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

    Abridge it.

What about Pete Townshend’s performance did you like?

His voice. I couldn't help but hearing Pete Townsend solo album songs in my head after hearing his voice for 18 hours. Makes me want to download all of his solo albums.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

In hindsight, I would have listened to the abridged version as it was just a bit long (18-19 hours), but the time did go by quickly.

An incredible but true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever

In October 2006, the night before he was to turn forty, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly fifty pounds overweight and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he saw where his sedentary lifestyle was taking him. Most of us look the other way when granted such a moment of clarity, but not Rich.

    Story
What made the experience of listening to Finding Ultra the most enjoyable?

The author read the book so it was as if Rich were reading the story directly to the reader.

What did you like best about this story?

I don't want to give away the story but the author captured our attention immediately with the opening story.

Which character – as performed by Rich Roll – was your favorite?

    Himself.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My extreme reaction is that it motivated me to try becoming a vegan and to purchase a Vitamix. Its been four weeks but so far, so good.

    Any additional comments?

The only reason I gave the audio book four stars rather than five stars is that I needed to also obtain a printed copy of the book to retain the information in the appendices. These chapters contain the specific foods to include in your vegan diet.

The story itself was fastinating, especially hearing it directly from Rich.
