Sometimes Marcus can get a bit repetitive, this is probably due to the fact that this book was actually a diary and was not written intending to be a proper book. I had a much better time listening to the book than reading it.
Marcus Aurelius was one of the few rulers who was good with words as well as with actions. The whole thing is great.
Duncan performs his reading marvelously, he brings Marcus to life, it feels like author is actually talking to you.
BEGIN EACH DAY by telling yourself: Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishne
It's a shame that only a few other classics from stoicism are availble at audible. I would like to see other books from seneca and a very good book about the subject here: A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy
The book is funny, the narrator has a way to make the worst ideas the world has ever created. On the other hand there is nothing original about the book. I have already seen a lot of stuff in this book on TV. The author just made it in written form. But on TV was more fun.
This is the first book I read by Jack Vance. I was surprised when I realized that many of his ideas inspired many modern and much more famous authors. Even RPG games such as dungeons and dragons were inspired by his books, for example the wizards having to memorize spells and then forgetting after they have been cast.Jack Vance has not receive the credit he is entitled.
Dying earth is gloomy place, and the characters reflect that. You are not going to find a happy endings here if that is what you are looking for. I just did not give it 5 stars because the outline of the 5 or 6 tales are very similar. But that does not mean I'm not listening to this author again, in fact I just purchased the next book in the series
The narrator is great at bringing the dying earth to life, metaphorically speaking since it's actually dying. haha
Would make a good afternoon B horror comedy.
It is a original book on the way it mixed many different genres like Horror, romance and mystery.
The title of the book suggests that you are going to get a badass main character but that's not the case.
Turning zombies into vampire like creatures is not very original creatures.
The plot is very shallow.
It is very easy to figure out the authors source of inspiration.
Physics is no easy subject, at least to me. Quantum theory harder still. However the author does a terrific job making theoretical physics accessible for the regular person. On top of that, there is just so much interresting stuff in this book that it is almost impossible to get everything in only one listen, specially while you are driving. I'm planning to listen it at least once again.
It is a book for those people who like me are absolutely fascinated by physics but just don't get what does those weird equations mean. If I had a teacher like that on high school I would probably had studied physics on college.. but you don't find teacher like him on highschools. =( It is the first time I can say I understand what entropy really is. I read many times on wikipedia and other books, and I thought I did understand, now i know I do.
There is still a long way to go before humanity is able to fully grasp the misteries of the big bang. And maybe the future that looks rather bleak may have a way out, to survive the end of the universe... hopefully
To begin I'd like to say that I believe that the disparity between sexes is a growing issue in the modern world. And the reason I bought this book was to learn ways I could negotiate better deals with women understanding more how they approach negotiation.
I got what I was looking for, partially; because the author spends the first 2/3 of the book just talking about how bad the society views women when they take a more aggressive approach.
After every point the author tries to get across she emphasizes it by giving example after example. It gets pretty boring after sometime since they are all the same. These examples could be very well be removed entirely from the book since it gets very repetitive and does not contribute at all besides filling pages.
To save your time, go straight to the important part of the book; simply go directly to chapter 7. From that point onwards is the best part of the book
However much of what the author says about negotiation is pretty basic stuff! If you are going to buy this book only to know more about negotiating, I would recommend skipping this one, even if you are a woman.
Very fun to listen - the main character, Emperor Mollusk, is certainly one os the best villains around.
A bit cliché - the domination of the universe.
The narrator is very good at creating different voices for every character.
Haven't finished the book yet to say if the sinister Brain is going to control the universe.
There are about 8 or 9 different guided meditations, one in each chapter, making it very easy to switch between them. These guided meditations are short, about ten minutes each and are an ideal listen during your day, when you are waiting in lines or while driving - just don't follow the narrator advice to close your eyes and you'll be fine ;)
I'm listening to this book almost every day and I can already notice the difference in my mood.
this is an incredible book about meditation in general and a new way of seeing the world as it is not as a construction of your self. I recommend this listen to everyone who is like me always anxious for no reason, like the world is about to end at any instant.
I'm planning to listen to it many times, probably two or three times a year.
The first thing I realized when I started listening to this book was that it was different from most other self-help change your mindset book. I have heard the main points the author expresses somewhere else but he is able to put it all in a new perspective. Even if you listen to NLP books, the power of your subconscious mind and from authors like Abraham-hicks, you should pick this book up.
Why “the secret” never worked? It’s because you can’t fool your subconscious mind into believing something unless it already believes in it. All the suffering is ego created, a beast that lives in the past or in the future completely ignoring the now. Live the now, the past is gone, and the future does not exists.
This book is just a big collection of tips on making friends. There was nothing I could call groundbreaking, not even innovative for that matter.
The author seems to be someone who read how to make friends and influence people and decided to make it shorter and more "wired". The last third of the book is all about how to become part of an online community.
