On April 12, 1862—one year to the day after Confederate guns opened on Fort Sumter and started the Civil War—a tall, mysterious smuggler and self-appointed Union spy named James J. Andrews and 19 infantry volunteers infiltrated Georgia and stole a steam engine called the General. Racing northward at speeds near 60 miles an hour, cutting telegraph lines, and destroying track along the way, Andrews planned to open East Tennessee to the Union army, cutting off men and materiel from the Confederate forces in Virginia.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who is very technically oriented and just wants the facts... not so much a story.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Stealing the General?

After two chapters I was not close to learning about The General.

Druid Atticus O’Sullivan hasn’t stayed alive for more than two millennia without a fair bit of Celtic cunning. So when vengeful thunder gods come Norse by Southwest looking for payback, Atticus, with a little help from the Navajo trickster god Coyote, lets them think that they’ve chopped up his body in the Arizona desert. But the mischievous Coyote is not above a little sleight of paw, and Atticus soon finds that he’s been duped into battling bloodthirsty desert shape-shifters called skinwalkers.

If you are in withdrawal from the Dresden series, you will love the Druid Chronicles. After reading 14 Dresden series books I was worried where to turn. Kevin Hearne is an excellent writer and I applaud the narrator as well. I promise you will enjoy this series.

When we last left the mighty wizard detective Harry Dresden, he wasn't doing well. In fact, he had been murdered by an unknown assassin. But being dead doesn't stop him when his friends are in danger. Except now he has nobody, and no magic to help him. And there are also several dark spirits roaming the Chicago shadows who owe Harry some payback of their own. To save his friends - and his own soul - Harry will have to pull off the ultimate trick without any magic....

I hate writing reviews, which is why you will find very few and very brief reviews from me. But Jim Butcher deserves my time. I started the Dresden series with book 5, which took me right into Harry Dresden's life. Butcher brings the reader quickly up to date on who is who, so you do not have to read his books in order, nor does he drag out the information. Book five drove me to book one and I am sadly on book fourteen.... bringing my months long relationship with Harry Dresden to a momentary end.

Ghost Story is a departure from his other books and I would not recommend starting here. Book thirteen gets into details of Harry's life that is of more interest to Harry's fan and probably not the neophyte.

When I first started this book, I wanted to scream!!! I could not believe where he had taken us and was hoping this book was akin to a Dallas dream episode. I could not get through this book fast enough to find out what was going to happen, something that Butcher has the wonderful ability to accomplish with his entire series. But this book had a different beat to it than his other novels and even had me frustrated as to where he had taken Harry.

I survived, as is evident from this brief review. I survived to again applaud Jim Butcher for his marvelous writing as well as his literary and cinematic references. No other writer that I have read has managed to consistantly deliver drama, intrique, suspense and more; in his every work. Thank you Jim Butcher.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The audiobooks are all read by james Marsters who is excellent at his job.

What other book might you compare Small Favor to and why?

I have read many sci-fi/fantasy series, and eventually you get to a book or two or three that just drags on and you have to put your head down to plow through it. I am on my 11th book in the series and have NEVER experienced this with any of the Dresden series. Butcher keeps you interested and involved the whole way through.

In Chicago, someone has been killing practitioners of magic, those incapable of becoming full-fledged wizards. Shockingly, all the evidence points to Harry Dresden's half brother, Thomas, as the murderer. Determined to clear his sibling's name, Harry uncovers a conspiracy within the White Council of Wizards that threatens not only him, but his nearest and dearest, too.

What does James Marsters bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Marsters is excellent in bringing the story to you. A pure pleasure.

    Any additional comments?

Jim Butcher is an incredible writer. He keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout each and every book. Also, if you pick up any one of the series, he gives you just enough information to update you as to who everyone is - something many autors either miss or overdo!
This is probably the best and most consistant series of books I have ever read and I am now on book 9. I started with book 5 because it was on sale and then went back and began the series with book 1. If there were more stars to give, I would definitely give it!

The Dresden series is the most consistently interesting/entertaining series I have ever read. Many of these 4+ book series tend to drag on at some part. Not this series! Jim knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat.

You can pick up any book in the series and start from there. I started with book 5 because it was on sale and then went back to book 1 and am now on book 8. One reason Jim is such an excellent author is because he quickly brings you up to date on who each character is in every book.

Went back to another authors series who entirely missed the above ability and I could not remember who anyone was.

Highly recommend this series to anyone who wants a great read.

A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. If you could sum up Storm Front in three words, what would they be?

I started with book 6 and have gone back to the beginning. Butcher keeps you involved from the beginning to the end. There isn't a dull moment. One of Butcher's great qualities is that he always gives you background on the characters so if you forget or start reading one of his other novels you are not left behind.

Have you listened to any of James Marsters’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The performance is excellent... no complaints.

It is only weeks after the Second Manassas in September 1862, and Robert E. Lee takes the war north, where he will be met by "Little Mac", General George McClellan, whose northern army far outnumbers and outguns the invading Confederates. In Richmond, Virginia, Starbuck is given command of a punishment battalion, a motley collection of cowards, thieves, deserters, and murderers, officered by men who do not welcome Starbuck's arrival.

The greatest disappointment is that after four novels I want a fifth!

Stephanie Harrington had always expected to be a forest ranger on her homeworld of Meyerdahl until her parents relocated to the frontier planet of Sphinx in the far distant Star Kingdom of Manticore. It should have been the perfect new home - a virgin wilderness full of new species of every sort, just waiting to be discovered. But Sphinx is a far more dangerous place than ultra-civilized Meyerdahl, and Stephanie's explorations come to a sudden halt when her parents lay down the law: no trips into the bush without adult supervision!
