Paris, 1944: the city steams in the summer heat, bristling with anticipation of its impending liberation. It marks the beginning of the end of a devastating war… and the beginning of a year like no other for Marie-Therese Brillard and her children, Colette and Christophe. They first came to Paris from Martinique in 1928, among the immigrants of color who flocked to France in the 1920s and 30s. They settled in Montmartre, a vibrant neighborhood teeming with musicians, writers, and artists, and began the arduous task of building a new life in a new land.

Not the worst book but one of the worst performances. Madisun Leigh sounds like a man and the dialog is really terrible...never could quite get a grip on the characters relationships to one another or the story. Pointless.

  • Winter of the World: The Century Trilogy, Book 2

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not really. There are interesting facts about WWII revealed which is a credit to Follet's research skills, but none of the characters came alive for me. I couldn't remember any of them from the first book, so it was like reading a whole new book.

Would you be willing to try another book from Ken Follett? Why or why not?

I have read all of Follett's book and some of them are amongst my absolute favorites. However, this series will be at the lower end of the favorite list for me, sadly.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Thought that John Lee sounded too much like he was reading.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    probably not

    Any additional comments?

    disappointed

For Oxford student Kivrin, traveling back to the 14th century is more than the culmination of her studies - it's the chance for a wonderful adventure. For Dunworthy, her mentor, it is cause for intense worry about the thousands of things that could go wrong.

Awful! Drags on and on and characters are confusing. Don't waste your free credit or your money.
