In this collection of his finest work from such magazines as Outside and Smithsonian, Krakauer explores the subject from the unique and memorable perspective of one who has himself battled peaks like K2, Denali, Everest, and, of course, Eiger.

Steve Anderson says: "Great book. Where Krakauer got his start..."

If you want to be swept up into the fierce world of triumph and loss in the world of climbing look no further than Jon Krakauer. He delves into the world of climbing, talks about famous, infamous and tragic figures and places and inspires me towards the limits of my potential. Does not specifically focus on Eiger, but it and other climbs.

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Very well written with great characters, believable and diverse. Great imagination. At a few parts surprising, and at others was a little slow.

    >When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Tango says: "Beautiful story, beautifully written"

I almost didn't bother with this book, thinking that it couldn't be that interesting, but I was so, so wrong. At times scary, tense, surprising, heart breaking, and always amazing. The Elephant Whisperer was a ride through the heart of South Africa, expect to learn a few Zulu words as well as bit about the culture and political climate of this region of South Africa, but more so every chapter is another harrowing adventure. Elephants, lions, cheetah, rhino, spitting cobras, black mambas, crocodiles, poachers, all make this book a constant adventure.
One plane ticket to Africa, please!
