The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil.

Would you try another book from Barbara Kingsolver and/or Dean Robertson?

Not sure. If another book by this author is read by the same narrator or in the same way... the answer is absolutely NO! The whole point of LISTENING to a book is for the narrator to engage the listener! Dean Robertson accomplished the complete opposite.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator ruined the story. The female reader used the EXACT SAME VOICE for EVERY character in the book, and there were at least FIVE different characters from a small child to a mother. I don't know WHAT they were thinking or HOW the author could allow her book to be presented in this fashion. I didn't want to finish listening to it and was actually angry/annoyed while listening throughout the book. I chose the book on the recommendation of a friend who neglected to tell me or rather forgot about the poor narrator. I would have loved to actually "READ" this book. I look for good audible books for long road trips and savor "reading" actual books while not in the car. "Poisonwood" is one book I would much rather have actually read.

Did The Poisonwood Bible inspire you to do anything?

"Poisonwood" inspired me to take more care in choosing an Audible selection. However, even if I were to have listened to an audio sample, I would never have known that the narrator NEVER changed the tone or sound of her voice when changing characters. I just wish someone would have pointed that out in customers' reviews.

    Any additional comments?

I am stupefied by the author's/publisher's decision to allow the narrator to read an entire book using the EXACT same voice for all the characters! It is confusing and extremely disconcerting!

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

What would have made Life of Pi better?

    A good story!

What do you think your next listen will be?

The third book in the Ken Follett trilogy, Fall of Giants.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jeff Woodman?

It doesn't really matter who is cast as narrator, the story is unbearably painful.

    Any additional comments?

I am shocked that I not only did not enjoy this book, but was unable to listen to more than two hours. I loved the Kite Runner. I completely devour historical fiction such as Unbroken and Ken Follett's trilogies. I look forward to Nelson DeMille thrillers and light-hearted novels featuring comedic heroines such as Stephanie Plum... but Life of Pi is horrendous. It is the most boring novel I have ever read or listened to. After at least two hours, STILL no plot! The story went nowhere and the characters are simply uninteresting to the point of "I don't care one bit about them or what happens to them". I don't understand why. Perhaps I should read the book instead, or better yet, see the film. I was so looking forward to listening to the story on a recent road trip, but instead had to purchase another audiobook instead. What a shame!

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Absolutely!

What did you like best about this story?

Unbroken satisfies every thirst a reader/listener craves in a perfect story: addictive plot, colorful characters, and the desire to learn something.

Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Unbroken is without a doubt one of the greatest audiobooks out there. The story is incredible and the narration is flawless. The story grabs the listening from "word one"and doesn't let you go. The fact that Unbroken is historically based, blows my mind.A better story could not be made up. The main character is perfectly flawed as are those in his life. Unbroken is a "must hear". You will not be disappointed.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Lion to be better than the print version?

Probably because Scott Brick is able to bring all the characters to life!

What did you like best about this story?

John Corey... funny... tough... smart... and charismatic.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was thoroughly entertained and intrigued by a field of work I am unfamiliar with.

    Any additional comments?

John Corey is a great character with a wonderful supporting cast and great storyline, voiced by the charismatic Scott Brick! The entire John Corey series is addictive, beginning with Plum Island, but be warned... only purchase Scott Brick's audiobooks. Once you tune into him, you won't be satisfied with any other narrator.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

What do you think your next listen will be?

What didn’t you like about Davina Porter’s performance?

Difficult to understand and not a very appealing voice.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Boredom!

    Any additional comments?

I was excited to begin listening to Outlander, but I have to say, this is the FIRST and ONLY audio book I've purchased that proved to be a huge disappointment. I tried several times to listen to this book, but finally gave up. The storyline is terrible and the performance sub-par. I was desperate to enjoy this book as I purchased it for a long car drive, but I stopped listening when I realized I was more bored listening to this book, than not listening to a book at all.
