This book is just OK, it's informative, assuming all of the stories in this book are true. I agree with some of the reviewers, the narrator sounds like his is out of breath at times. The information in the book puts me at peace somewhat, it answered some of the questions I had about death, validation, if you want to call it. But it's not super good or bad, hens the three stars. A good purchase if you catch it on sale, which I did.
Worst book I've ever listened to, and the bad news is that it's freakishly long. Couldn't wait to finish it. The story had no purpose, just keeps on going and going... The narration is the worst part, can't understand what she's saying half the time. Wish I knew audio books can be returned.
This is one of the books that I highly recommended to friends over and over. I had since been searching for something similar but no luck. This was one the few books that kept me engaged almost 100% of the time. As I mentioned in my other reviews, I have a problem keeping focus while listening, always drifting away and came back finding myself missing a big chunk of the story. This book did not do that, which to me is an indication of a good book. The narration made it a easy listen, the voice is nice and clear and he does a good job portraying all of the characters, even nailed the accents. I find myself wishing my hour long commute was longer, and I didn't want it to end. Definitely get this book and you won't be disappointed.
I have become a Du Maurier fan after reading this book. The writing is so beautiful and rich I'm short of words to describe it. I heard about this book in a Stephen King interview after reading his book "Bag of Bones", he was talking about deception and mentioned this book. It was an interesting concept so I thought I give it a try. Not knowing what to expect, I was sucked into a pleasant surprise. I'm not usually a classic novel type, but this book had converted me. I was so fascinated even a few weeks after I finished book that I went to find all three versions of the film and TV adaptations to watch. I'm buying her other books too, so far My Cousin Rachel had not disappointed me.
This is my first Stephen King novel, I got it because it's recommended by my cousin. I enjoyed most of it, the sound effects are kinda distracting, I didn't enjoy the singing so much. I can see why Mr. King is a best seller, his writing has a lot of depth and it makes you think. But it's not a memorable one, it's the kind of book that's purely for entertaining, it's not something that sticks with you, keep you thinking months afterward. As the matter of fact, I had forgotten that I read it until I came across it to review. I haven't read any of his other books so I can't compare. But I can imagine that someone will enjoy this one very much if you like his other ones. He does a good job narrating it too, while not a professional, he captures the essence of the book very well.
I enjoyed the series so much that I didn't want it to end. All three books are excellent read though if I have to pick a favorite it will have to be the first one. Don't want to keep repeating myself about how much I love the series after reviewing all three books, just get them and you won't regret. Can't wait for the second movie to come out!
Naturally I had to get this book after reading The Hunger Games. It did not disappoint! The story is taking more of a darker turn than the first one but equally intriguing. There is not much I can say about it but rave! I'm very picky about giving reviews, it's hard to squeeze a 5-star rating out of me, but I could have given it a 10 if I could, same goes to all three books in the series. While the first one still remains my favorite, this book is nonetheless just as good. Don't wait, get all three books and it will be the best credits/money you ever spent.
I bought the book after seeing the movie, and regret not reading it sooner. What a wonderful, intriguing story with so much depth to the characters and background history of the storyline. The richness of this beautiful book in none other. I like the narrator's performance, while others say that her voice is not suitable to portray Katniss, I find her voice mesmerizing and engaging, which is hard to do with me (I have a habit of drifting away while listening). This book kept me on my toes from the beginning to the end. Very good book, lives up to all the hype. And I'm glad I read the book after seeing the movie, it has so much depth than the movie, also answered some of the questions I had. If you like the movie, the book is 10X better!
I brought this book only because it's a part of a three book series. It's not bad, not great, just OK. Like the first book, I have trouble following the storyline, something about the pace of the book, I would find the characters in a place during a event, and have no idea how they got there. Of course it's partly thanks to my habit of drifting away while listening, but that's my point, it can't keep me engaged. Anyway, if you like the first book, definitely get this one.
I can't help but to compare it to The Hunger Games trilogy, and I have to say that this is not even close. Of course the bar is very high, it doesn't mean this is a bad book. For some reason, it doesn't keep me engaged, I find my mind drifting off somewhere and when I pull myself back, I'm missing a chunk of the story, but I don't bother to rewind and find out. Of course this might be just my problem, as I find other books would do the same for me too. However, there are also some books that will keep me on my toes at all times, "Gone Girl", "14" and "The Hunger Games", to name a few. All in all, I can easily see one can enjoy this book very much, if you like this Si-Fi teen book genera.
Can't say I'm a huge fan of Tina Fey before this book, but I have to say after listening to this book I can see why she survived in such a male dominant world of comedy, especially a comedy writer. The story is more of a biography, with some very witty and undoubtedly funny words from Ms. Fey. I find myself laughing out loud at times, which is hard to do listening to an audio book. The storyline is not particularly interesting, but the performance of Tina Fey definitely helped tremendously with the quality of this book. If you are looking for a lighthearted easy listen, you can't go wrong with this book. It's good to take a break from all the thrillers I listen to most of the time.
