Thousands of years ago, fairies and humans fought a great battle for the magical island of Ireland. When it became clear that they could not win, all of the fairies moved below ground, except for the 8th Family, the demons. Rather than surrender, they used a magical time spell to take their colony out of time and into Limbo. There they have lived for decades, preparing to exact their violent revenge on humans.

Winner of such prestigious honors as the Booker Prize and Whitbread Award, Ian McEwan is justifiably regarded as a modern master. Set in 1972, Sweet Tooth follows Cambridge student Serena Frome, whose intelligence and beauty land her a job with England's intelligence agency, MI5. In an attempt to monitor writers' politics, MI5 tasks Serena with infiltrating the literary circle of author Tom Healy. But soon matters of trust and identity subvert the operation.

This book has a soft tone, it made me unsure it would grab me, but eventually, it did. There were times i thought "where's this going?", but get there it does... and quite well. Not for those who need a ton of action, but recommended.

When small-time heroin dealer Jai McDiarmid turns up dead one fine Glasgow morning, no one is that surprised - he'd been sleeping with a drug trafficker's girlfriend and had made himself a lot of enemies - so many, in fact, that Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod doesn't know where to start when she is assigned to the case.

The accent is pretty thick on this narrator, so be ready for that. I found the story interesting, tho not sprinkled with much humor. Good characters, but nothing remarkable.

This book had some really, really funny lines. Early on i thought i'd found a great mix of comedy, seriousness and a bit of mysticism. But instead, it went overboard (for me) with the other-wordly stuff, and just kind of lost me. I'm disappointed because, as i said, there were parts i really enjoyed. I'm just not into the fantasy world stuff, so it needs to be in smaller doses for me. Oh well, won't be continuing...

Same lead character as book one, but the story just didn't grab me. Felt like too many different threads maybe, and not enough holding it all together? not sure, but just wasn't as good as previous.

The last piece of the puzzle, however, turns up closer to home when Puri learns of the one person who can identify the killer. Unfortunately it is the one woman in the world with whom he has sworn never to work: his Mummy-ji.

These books stray and annoy me sometimes, but i really enjoy the main character (Vishi) and his mix of competence and over-confidence... He's imperfect, and amusingly so. The stories have medium pacing, which feels about right, but some might consider slow. Still, it's a comfortable listen.

The World at Night is an edge-of-your-seat World War II tale of intrigue and espionage, set in the shadowy back streets and glittering salons of occupied Paris. Film producer Jean Casson, a Paris sophisticate, struggles to come to terms with the uncomfortable realities of life under German occupation, as he becomes caught up in the initial actions of what was to become the French Resistance.

I really like George Guidall narrating, so that made this an easier choice. I usually pick police procedurals, but have to say, i enjoyed the feel of this story. You really got a sense for how casson loves his country and hurts for what it's going thru. Good characters and story. I quite liked. In fact, it lead me to get book 2, which i did not enjoy as much, but still, i'm not sorry i got to meet this author and his characters.

I've thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series. The one before this was good, but i did not think was the best. This one is pretty damn good. I must say however, i felt there was one weak point in the end that bothered me a little, so i didn't give 5 stars, but otherwise, this is a great listen. I'll be back for more. Recommended

In Israel, a man clutching a backpack searches desperately for a boat. In Minnesota, Virgil Flowers gets a message from Lucas Davenport: You're about to get a visitor. It's an Israeli cop, and she's tailing a man who's smuggled out an extraordinary relic - a copper scroll revealing startling details about the man known as King Solomon. Wait a minute, laughs Virgil. Is this one of those Da Vinci Code deals? The secret scroll, the blockbuster revelation, the teams of murderous bad guys? Should I be boning up on my Bible verses? He looks at the cop. She's not laughing.
