Virgil's always been known for having a somewhat active, er, social life, but he's probably not going to be getting too many opportunities for that during his new case. While competing in a fishing tournament in a remote area of northern Minnesota, he gets a call from Lucas Davenport to investigate a murder at a nearby resort.

i think this is the 3rd in sandford's "Virgil Flowers" series that i've listened to. I've enjoyed them all. Not the same as the Davenport series, but i think i like them just as much. Narration was good, story was good... i don't ask for much more.

Joe Spork repairs clocks, a far cry from his late father, a flashy London gangster. But when Joe fixes one particularly unusual device, his life is suddenly upended. Joe's client, Edie Banister, is more than just a kindly old lady - she's a former superspy. And the device? It's a 1950s doomsday machine. And having triggered it, Joe now faces the wrath of both the government and a diabolical South Asian dictator, Edie's old arch-nemesis.

This was definitely and odd type of mystery, but wow, it was interested, and funny, and sexy... it's so strange how it all started pulling together. I guess i didn't have a good sense for the story i was getting into, but i really enjoyed the characters and the deep web that they get pulled into. A much bigger story than i anticipated, but really well done. (I don't usually like them this long either, but this was worth it.)

A debut novel in the vein of Greene and le Carré, A Dying Breed is a brilliant and gripping story of the politics of news reporting, intrigue and blood set between the dark halls of Whitehall, the shadowy corridors of the BBC and the perilous streets of Kabul, in the shadowy le Carré-esque world of foreign correspondents reporting from war zones around the world. Carver, an old BBC hack, is warned off a story when a bomb goes off, killing a local official in Kabul, but his instincts tell him something isn't quite right....

This book at first seemed to go in a lot of directions and i wasn't sure what was happening... starting to wonder if i was going to get into it. Next, thing i knew, i was way pulled in and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, in hindsight, i really like how it did - how made me wonder and then subtly drew me in. Very well written.

    Narration was very good too.

After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead.

I enjoyed this listen. A bit slow paced i think, but a good story and a good mystery to pull you in. I did think some of the grudges carried from "back when" seemed a bit heavy, but then, i've never lived in a small town. Recommended.

When a cop's body is found burned and decapitated, the last thing Andy Carpenter expected is for a stranger to waltz into his office and admit to the crime. For the wise-cracking millionaire defense attorney suffering from "lawyer's block", the case looks like a no-brainer...until the cops pick up another suspect: Andy's lead P.I., Laurie Collins, who happens to be the love of his life.

If this narrator isn't actually Andy Carpenter, i'm gonna be shocked... I'm beginning to think the narration is the star of this show - i mean it's REALLY good. Not sure this guy could voice any character - but a lawyer from North Jersey? oh yeah.

I should add that the story was again very good (this was my 2nd in the series), and again, it had lots of comic sarcasm from Andy. He's a wonderful smart ass. And yes, i think it goes too far sometimes. Maybe more so this time. But in general, he just cracks me up.

Finally, again, the stories are just too short! When i'm pulled into a book, i need more time in there. Sorry, that's my only criticism here. Def recommended!

It's hard to say this was too long, because i think the author really wants us to have a sense for who this lead character is.. and we get that, alo. I just felt i could do without some of it. I enjoyed the story in total, i just found my mind drifting from time to time, and that's rare for me. I enjoyed where the story went, but maybe need an abridged version for people like me?

Rodeo Grace Garnet lives alone, save for his old dog, in a remote corner of Arizona known to locals as the Hole. He doesn't get many visitors, but a body found near his home has drawn police attention to his front door. The victim is not one of the many illegal immigrants who risk their lives to cross the border just south of the Hole, but is instead a member of one of the local Indian tribes.

This had some good characters, especially the main lead. But in general, everyone's lives were so awful, and life is just so bad, i found it almost too depressing to get thru at times. I think the narration was good, but not sure, since it was mostly all such a downer. If you like very dark story, not so much violent, but "bleak and hopeless", well, this is for you.

I still love these characters, and the stories are always tangled and interesting. I especially like how the author can lead you into thinking "this is about to happen" and you tense up for it... and it doesn't. Or something ELSE does. Just well written. Now i will say that the flashes of love interest between the 2 leads in this book were stronger here and i found that disappointing and bit too telegraphed. We all know they'd be perfect for each other - and that's why they CANT be together... Of course they can't. I don't know, it just seemed a bit heavy handed this time. Still, excellent book, and perfect narration.

On a night flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing very intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that's going stale and his wife, Miranda, who he's sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start - he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit - a contrast that once inflamed their passion but has now become a cliché.

When i read the write-up, i wasn't sure how the author was going to make this plausible, but i gotta say - he did. I was pulled into the story just like I hope for. Good story and characters i think. I didn't find many people worth rooting for, so probably wouldnt do a sequel (if there was such) but still, i'd recommend this one.

A woman at home in Liverpool is disturbed by a persistent tapping at her back door. She's disturbed to discover the culprit is a raven and tries to shoo it away. Which is when the killer strikes. DS Nathan Cody, still bearing the scars of an undercover mission that went horrifyingly wrong, is put on the case.

I guess i'm a little tired of the cops with the demons, and the male / female co-workers sexual tension... etc. It just feels like the books have all cops as alcoholics, or some other personal battle. So not saying the story was bad. In fact, the criminal was pretty good, and some of the side characters were interesting, but in general, i didnt find very original characters.

I've only listened to a couple, but i really like this series. Just crazy funny sometimes, but always with a solid, serious story line and a good mystery etc. The best part is the humor tho. (Even when he goes to far with the sarcasm.. still pretty funny.) My one complaint is that these all seem a little short. Wish they were closer to the normal 10 hours. Still, one of my favorite series.
