Im a guy who likes both vampires & detectives. My favorite author/character combo is Robert B. Parker's Spencer series. Im also an Ann Rice fan. This book I got on sale & the following book, Every which way but dead. I have to say it took awhile to get into the characters not having listen to the 1st book. But by half way though I was very interested in where the book was going & all the new type of character that she added to the vampire genre. By the end of the book I was hooked & I went directly to the 3rd book. I love following a character's growth through a serious of books. Im going to enjoy these character's and this serious. I love, love this book! It was better then the 1st and mad that it is over!
The book has all the things that I love. A not so perfect hero, who is looking to find himself and do the right thing. Willing to do things that are not always what we view as the right thing like kill people but does it b/c not to would be worse. Funny self deprecating. If you have not read this author get the 1st book you will immediately get this one and be waiting like I am for the 3rd! HDTV
The thing I hated most about this book is that it ended and I have to wait another year for Crais to write another book. Like every book of his ( I have listen or read them all) Crais' characters of Cole and Pike make you want to believe that men like that exist.
Here Cole is on the hunt for a woman and her boyfriend who were kidnaped and there only chance to survive is Cole. But in his pursuit he is taken also. Pike is now looking for his friend and with John Stone ( another recurring character that I love) are out to find them. pike and Stone are good men who do bad things and all I can say is I hope to have friends like that looking for me if I'm taken. A plus book!
I love this book; I listened to Straga before I bought this book on sale and must say that it was a much better book then Straga. I'm glad that I gave the author another shot and I'm going to go through and listen to his others. I'm the kind of reader/listener that once I find author I like I stick with them. (Robert Parker, Robert Crais, Dennis Lehane, etc.)
As for this book, as the previous person wrote, Flood is not for the faint at heart. It is very graphic and almost all the characters, most notable Burke are extremely flawed. But the thing about Burke is although he operates on the wrong side of the law; he does the right thing in a world that few people would even go into. Bad people can do bad things for the right reason, that's Burke.
