The character development in this book was wonderful and the story just pulls you in and won't let you go. The narrator was excellent and I loved the way he was able to change his tone as he was narrating the various characters.
I have listened to her other books and loved them but I think this is the best yet. She has a special way of getting you absorbed into her characters. The two detectives in this story are both so compelling.

If you like off beat, quirky characters and supernatural stuff and wrapped up then this is for you. This is not your typical vampire action book. It is well written, smart, funny and unique. I loved the writing style. Main characters are lots of fun. I have already downloaded the next in the series. It is difficult to describe this book but if you like an action story that is fun, scary and a little sophisticated this is it!

When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there’s either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills - and there’s nothing wrong with Joe Ledger’s skills. And that’s both a good and a bad thing. It’s good because he’s a Baltimore detective who has just been secretly recruited by the government to lead a new task force created to deal with the problems that Homeland Security can’t handle....

I really wanted to like this book. I was very intrigued by the plot and I like a lot of action. After a while I found the characters to be mostly stereotypical and not really interesting. Although I liked the main character, he turned into an action hero figure by the end of the story. What bothered me the most about the book though was the end was so predictable. I knew exactly how it would end. There was a clue given in the book that was so obvious that it should have been part of the plot that the main characters figured it out. But the way the plot runs, all of these really smart people with all of the computers don't really follow it up. I kept hoping that the book would have a surprise plot twist-- which it didn't.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby....

I was surprised that so many reviewers gave outstanding marks to Gyllenhaal. I have listened to around 100 books and I found his narration to be one of my least favorite. Since it was a short book, I went ahead and listened to the entire thing anyway. I found his voice to be boring sounding and he was not really able to make the personalities of individual characters come alive like some of the good narrators.

Fitzgerald is an exceptionally beautiful writer but I did not really care much for the characters. For the most part, they were rich, self absorbed and shallow. As another reviewer discussed, it was probably more relevant during the period it was written. For me it did not seem to withstand the test of time.

This is not meant as a criticism of Fitzgerald's ability as a wonderful writer.

I had already listened to her other 2 books and really enjoyed them so I thought I would like this one as well. There was something much more raw in this book, not just the characters but also the setting, and I really did not enjoy it. I listened to the entire book since I wanted to find out what happened. It was well written but there are many things about the book that are disturbing. I do not want to go into too much detail because I do not want to give away too much of the plot. I have listened to many dark and violent books but there was something about this one....

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

I really had no idea what this book was when I started listening. The characters are all very compelling (even the underworld ones) and I loved all the personalities in the story. It was such a fun story and especially liked the taste of San Francisco where the book is set. Ending was also satisfying (one of my pet peeves). The narration was also excellent.

Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series has become a worldwide phenomenon thanks to the appeal of endearing protagonist Precious Ramotswe and the author’s charmingly quirky prose. In this 13th installment, Mma Ramotswe’s attention is focused on a pesky disciplinary problem at her adopted daughter’s school - while Grace Makutsi adjusts to wedded bliss and the famed Clovis Andersen arrives in Botswana looking for more than bush tea.

I absolutely loved this book. I have listened to or read all of the previous in the series and this has to be my favorite (although I loved all of the others). It keeps you listening for all the various plots and the characters are delightful. This book is pure enjoyment. As always, the woman who does the narration has that wonderful voice, which is the icing on the cake.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children, unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery.

I love the way the author developed the story. She really made the protagonist such a fascinating character. By the end of the story I was so wrapped up in all the characters and it took a while to get them out of my head. I listen to books while I am at the gym as incentive to work out. Near the end of the story I broke my gym rule and listen to the rest at home. I listen to a lot of audio books and this was a great story that was well written.

When a murdered woman is found in the city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks to be a routine case for Inspector Tyador Borlof the Extreme Crime Squad. But as he investigates, the evidence points to conspiracies far stranger and more deadly than anything he could have imagined. Borl must travel from the decaying Beszel to the only metropolis on Earth as strange as his own.

I really enjoyed this book. It was well written, the plot was original, the characters compelling and the end was satisfying. The author did such an excellent job building the unique landscape of the story. The story itself is a little complex and not for someone looking for a light plot. I also love the parallels that can be drawn with other border and immigration issues that we encounter around the world.
This book would make a great movie!
