I bought this book after just a cursory peek at reader's reviews. I should have read deeper. I hated the narration almost as much as the writer's style. Rather than a story, Jeannette merely recites facts. Rather than build the character's emotions, she merely tells you
I would not recommend this book to anyone.
I think the writer's story might be interesting, but the delivery left much to be desired.
I have read other books by this author, loved one of them but didn't so much the others... this book started a little slow and I wondered if I could stick it out. Fortunately I stayed the course and really enjoyed everything about the book. At first I thought the author's reading was a little bit flat, but soon found she gave exactly the right tone to each character. Of course, they were her own invention!
I have read lots of books on tape and enjoyed most of them. I found this book really tough to get thru and finally tossed in the towel after the first half. The plot didn't grab me, I just didn't care about any of the characters, found the dialog boring and the reader irritating. This is one I won't even try to go back and finish.
I enjoyed the book, although you must get used to the pace of it. I would call it, for lack of a better description, a "western".
I didn't even finish this book, I just didn't care enough about any of the characters. I have read this author before and liked her okay but realize now that she doesn't develop her characters well. She tells you "John was devastated" rather than use language to describe the gut wrenching emotion she is trying to convey. I suspect this is just a lack of sophistication by the author?
For anyone who enjoys reading a well written book by an author who knows how to turn a phrase to capture a scene, this book is for you. I laughed and cried but I was NEVER bored. This is not a quick read or light hearted fare, but it is certainly satisfying for those who tire of Oprah style books
I had read this years ago and loved it. Reading it again through an audio book brought back all the joy and pleasure I experienced the first time. A well written book.
I couldn't get into this book! I tried, however, as I took it along on a long drive and had nothing else to listen to. Nothing memorable about it.
