"Long and stretched out but loved it nonetheless"
First 80 percent of the book is really slow and moves at crawling speed. GRRM is excellent at what he does but with this book being the biggest, it just felt like forever. The last 15% does pick up good speed and cover a lot of characters but still not good enough to cover up for the slow beginnings.
The series was going great for the first 3 books and then it started going downhill. And this book takes it further down. Still better than a lot of fantasy books i have read. I expect wonders in the next installment considering the climax in this book.
I highly recommend it for people waiting for redemption from characters that seem to get away every time, so definitely worth a read if you have come so far. Roy Dotrice seems to not carry the same voice over from his earlier books he gave to every character, but that pinch feels only for a few chapters and then you get over it.
"Not as great as Great Hunt and slow"
This one was short and slow. I guess consequences of the Great Hunt caused the slow start and ramping on to a new quest took half the book. Egwen, Elaine and Nayneve get a lot of facetime in this book and hardly any Rand. Perrin and Matt have started to become one of my favorites.
The narrators are really holding on to the characters from one book to another. They have been consistent with every character unlike other series where narrators adapt different voices over few books. I'm also glad they will be narrating until AMoL.
I wished I would have read Jordan's WoT when I was a kid. But its never too late and I know what to recommend my kid. Great series to keep listening and if you love it, there are 14 books. So enjoy.
"Book 2 raises the bar even higher..."
I had no idea that i was going to be so caught up in reading this series when I had picked Book 1 of WoT. This series is one of the best and Book 2 makes it even better. The story picks up so fluently after the first book. I wish I had started reading these books when I was a kid. But I know now what to give my kids to read when they will be able to read.
Narrators are excellent. I still dont understand the switch between male and female narrators because they both seem to narrate for male/female characters. In any case, it does not bother me anymore.
And last but not the least, thank you Audible for bringing this series in an excellent production quality. These make my chores so fun and I look forward to them.
"Excellent beginning to the series"
It was difficult to get itno to the series looking at the 13 books lined up. But I'm glad I finally picked it up and read the first one. This is an excellent fantasy book and I'm excited to read the rest now. The author does an excellent job of filling in the gaps in the story and the confusion that it begins with. Some of my friends did suggest me to begin with New Spring but I wanted to read as the author wrote it.
The beginning of the book is slow and confusing with weirdly similar names but eventually it gets clearer. Some parts of the book are slow when they start explaining things but there is good action and pace later.
The narrator, Michael Kramer did an excellent job. I didnt see the reason for the female narrator in there since Kramer did do justice to all the female voices too.
I'm looking forward to reading Great Hunt.
"Worth the wait!!!"
I'm sad that its over. Ken Follett as always carries all his characters so well throughout the book and the historical events that they feel real. I loved FoG but WoW exceeds my expectations. I was expecting that Ken Follett would have chapters of Hitler and his death camps like all other history books, but I was glad that the focus was on the characters and the camps and Hitler were mentioned if any character's storyline went through it. This book is about the second generation of characters from FoG after WW1 and the book starts at an excellent pace and it never loses that pace. Cannot wait for End of Eternity.
John Lee did excellent as always. Just like my FoG review, he was great at all the accents. Cockney, Welsh, English, American, Russian, German.
Audible fix Part 3 of the 4 downloaded files. So just download that if you want to re-read the fixed part.
"Too pun'ny but good information"
The authors seem to go on an on an on with bad pun jokes. Dont get me wrong, its funny for a while and then it just gets annoying every time. Good information for foodies and people who just want to know how stuff works and reacts. They could have cut down on too much chemistry. Basic chemistry is okay but when you start getting in long chemical compounds, my brain starts to hurt. Maybe it will be better on a book than in audio.
some of the chapters could be skipped but thats just my personal choice. overall, okay informative book. narrator does a good job.
"A step back from SoS"
This installment is a slower of all the books so far. It feels that way because I didn't care for most of the characters in this book. There were new introductions and I couldn't wait to get to the 3 that were interesting. I have heard this book was important before I started to read the 5th one.
In any case, I bought this one instead of the one narrated by John Lee. One of my complaints with Roy Dotrice is that he keeps changing voices of female characters every book. I guess its a tough job to keep track but not when you have the previous recordings.
Overall story is okay, still better than many of other books but pace drops a lot compared to the previous installment (SoS).
"It all comes together"
SoS is one of the biggest in the series and I guess it has to be. This book is full of jaw dropping events. This series just keep getting better. I'm halfway through Feast for crows but so far SoS has been my favorite. GRRM just rocks. I hope by the time I finish Dance of Dragons, GRRM would push out the next installment.
"The story keeps getting better every book"
GRRM has definitely become my favorite fiction writer. I cannot wait to read the entire 'Song of Ice and fire series'. CoK lives up to its first book and in some terms even more. More new characters are introduced, more are killed GRRM style. The thing that amazes me is the way I can remember every character's story. But I guess that's what good writers do. If you already finished GoT, there is no reason to wait or doubt this series. Go for it, highly recommend it.
Roy Dotrice performance is accurate every time and very engaging. The narrator is one of the reasons I keep coming back to this series.
"Great history book"
If you like history and would like the chronological order of all the events that led to WWII, this is the book for you. Excellent research work from the author. Mr Gardner did a great job too. Worth listening to if you are a history buff.
